Bright Red Mistake

Hi - My natural color is black.  I'm 22 and had never dyed or treated my hair before.  I wanted a bright change and loved Ariana Grande's bright red look, so in October (2 1/2 months ago) I went to a salon.  They stripped the black from my hair and because it was so dark, it took two times.  The first time it only went to an ugly blonde.  When it was finally a lighter blonde/white he put the red dye on it.  I sort of liked it for about 2 weeks.  Now I realize how extreme it was and how much I hate it.  It cost me so much money and I'm mad at myself.  Anyway, in correcting it, I don't want to do further damage so need advice.  I'd like to go to a dark auburn.  Scarlett Johanssan in The Avengers is more like it.  There are over-the-counter hair color strippers (to get the bright red out of my hair) then I found an over-the-counter (Loreal) auburn that is really close.  Should I risk this?  Going to a salon for correction is going to cost another fortune and my budget is tight.  But to risk any damage (burning or (God-forbid) hair falling out) I will save if that's what I should do. Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.

No need to damage the hair any further so avoid colour strippers and box dyes. If you're wanting to go darker you can put a direct dye (such as the ones sold here) over your current colour to create the shade you want. Adore do some great natural colours. If you can post a pic of your current colour and the shade you would prefer we can advise on a shade or mix that will get you there.

You could try a colour remover first (not a stripper, no peroxide!) might not even be necessary depending on your current colour tbh, then dye with a deposit-only direct dye.  As Wicked Pixie says, have a look at the Adore range of dyes on this site.

Avoid box dyes, your hair's already been double processed.

The bright red is, of course, what I have now.  The other auburn is what I'd like.  I just don't think that putting an auburn over this bright red is going to be 'darker' or cover it completely.  Doesn't it need to be stripped of this awful bright red first?  Thanks.

What did the salon use for the red? You can probably just fade it, or use a colour remover (NOT a stripper, they are basically bleach) If it was a semi permanent direct dye you can fade it by washing with a strong shampoo and hot water. i like dandruff shampoo, worked into damp hair and left on for about half an hour. I cover with a shower cap and add heat from a hairdryer, then rinse with hot water.

I just called and he said that he used a semi-perm red.  But did use bleach to strip it of the black.

What hair dressers consider semi permanent is usually a demi. They contain peroxide. A true semi is a direct dye. You need to ask him to be more precise as the use of a demi means your hair was triple processed.

Follow the others advice of fading using a color remover and the anti dandruff shampoo and once the color is less bright, it will be easier to get to the desired shade using a direct dye only.

The fact that he applied it to freshly bleached hair made me think it was probably a true semi. Did you ask about the brand at all?

My guess is that it is Pravana Red.  Do the fading techniques that Wicked suggested to get it to an orange color.  Then you can use a light red based brown semi over that to get the color you want..
