Hey all! Just wondered if you guys could help me...

I've always used Special Effects Cherry Bomb, I love the colour and it lasts for ages.  The problem is the transfer, oh my GOD the transfer.  Every morning my face is pink, my neck and shoulders are pink, I only have to lean on somebody's shoulder for a moment and they are then pink.  Obviously the worst of the transfer is in the first week or so and it's not so bad as time goes on but it is SUCH a pain in the arse. My bath is permanently pink, and my bedsheets destroyed (I have now invested in dark brown ones, haha).

So anyway the other month I had to use Directions Poppy Red as I was short money-wise and I've had to stick with it for the last few times.  The colour is okay for the first week but after the second wash my hair is pink, not red.  So I have to re-dye it really frequently, therefore not saving any money at all and having a colour I'm not that keen on.  HOWEVER there is no transfer at all. I can even sleep on my nice white sheets.  My face/neck/shoulders/laptop/bath/lovers/etc no longer look like they have been caught in the crossfire of a barbie massacre.

(I'm getting to the point, honest.)

So... is there a middle ground somewhere? Is there a brand that will give me a nice vibrant red that lasts longer than a couple of washes, but without turning my entire world pink? I've only ever tried SFX and Directions. Is manic panic worth a go?

Any advice/tips/anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! πŸ™‚

Try Adore.  Their reds last around three weeks before they fade down to base colour and there is pretty much no transfer.  They're all pink based apart from Truly Red, and I'd recommend Crimson for a Cherry Bomb substitute.

Thank you! I'll give it a shot.  When you say three weeks, how often are we washing in that time? I only tend to wash once a week, and use dry shampoo in between, so I wonder if i'd get any longer out of it...

Cheers, much appreciated πŸ™‚

I use SFX Nuclear Red which is a very bright, true red. No transfer at all and it lasts for ages!

Wow, I've used nuclear red before and I seem to remember the transfer to be just as bad as Cherry Bomb. Maybe it's just my hair that's the problem πŸ™ Although perhaps I'll give it another shot. Thank you πŸ™‚

Everyone's hair reacts differently to different brands (Directions bled off of my hair like no other, but SFX isn't too bad).  Everyone seems to generally agree that Adore has less rub off; it seems to be a different formula, because it's very, very runny as opposed to the creaminess of SFX/Directions (I had to apply Adore with an applicator bottle).

Nuclear Red is good, but it's orange based, so you'd basically be getting the same results as Cherry Bomb, only with an orange tint instead of a pink one.

When I said Adore lasted three weeks in my hair, that was washing 2-3 times a week (I sweat too much when I work out to bring it down to 1-2), so 6-9 washes for me.  In comparison, SFX tends to last anywhere from 15-25 washes, depending on how long I've let it set (two hours for 15 washes, four hours for 25).

There are ways to prevent transfer/bleeding. Try diluting the dye with either water if it is a thick dye (then apply to dry hair) or conditioner if it is a runny one. Rinse with cold water and seal with conditioner. A final rinse with vinegar is also helpful. I always use these tricks and I never suffer from bleeding or transfer any more. A quick shampoo after dyeing can sometimes be necessary if there is a lot of dye still on your hair, but I don't find this necessary with diluted dyes.
