Hmmm, so it's less likely to be a box dye. Have you investigated Ion Colour Flash? I spotted them in Sally's a few months ago when I was buying new gloves etc, never heard of them before and was intrigued because from what I can see it works on the same principle as Directions etc.

I have no experience though, one review on the Sally's website says that they had problems fading it.

I have noticed a difference in some dyes, Special Effects especially seem to have issues sourcing pigments which has been delaying them getting to BeeUnique more than they used to in my experience. Unfortunately the blue I'm currently using is two shortages ago (I'm using it to get rid of it, it's approaching a year old).

I had a bit of problem with removing Adore aquamarine but managed to get most of it out with a color remover. I still have a very pale blue base but its hardly noticeable.

How about those new BleachLondon dyes they sell in boots? Has anyone tried those? I am pretty sure they have a blue as well.

I used the Cobalt blue from Ion on my boyfriends hair and he has the opposite problem, He has to redye every other week

Yes Puerkz they have several blues but I have not (as yet) come across anyone who has used them.

Ah, well it's probably not Ion then (shame it fades that fast, some of their colours look quite nice).

Never realised how many new brands there were, I'm in a dye little bubble it seems.

I was thinking Pravana too just now. I've heard mixed things about Pravana. Some saying they won't go, some saying they disappear fast, but the latter is mostly the pastels range so not surprising. But they're a US range and becoming more available here in the last few months too.

I definitely understand that it's not always a certain range or brand. We do see even people on here complaining about a dye they've used for ages being a totally different colour (as with last years batch of Special Effects Atomic pink being far more red than before) so it's obvious they change formula sometimes. So it's easy to believe they change formulas to add silicones etc. I do know that no one has come here yet with a blue problem, to my knowledge anyway.

We too have problem with people impulse dying and over bleaching or not bleaching enough. The fashions for pastels have been a bit of a bind to us with people wanting miracle cures for hair breaking off!

Thank you Scott for all that info though!

I have used Pravana vivids, all of them, and the blue definitely lasts the longest. The violet too. Thats why i always used those (diluted with conditioner) to color my pale yellow fringe various shades of pastel blue, periwinkle, lilac, icy blue, etc. It would last about 2 months before leaving my hair a silvery white, and that was with literally only using 1/4 of a pea size of the actual dye to about 5 tablespoons of conditioner.

I used a mix of pravana blue, pravana violet, and manic panic after midnight blue on my hair a few months ago, undiluted. holy cow, it was a beast to remove. after a month, it still looked like i had just dyed it, and that was with about 8 washings (because i was trying to lighten/brighten it up a bit, normally in a month i only wash 4-6 times at the most) and i used a chi flat iron on it about 10 days in that month. i got tired of it and wanted to remove it, along with the permanent black in my hair. first, i wanted to try and remove as much of the blue as possible, i had put it over all my hair, including the permanent black, so i did 3 vitamin c treatments, used a sulphatey shampoo a bunch of times and did several moisturizing treatments and there really wasnt much of a change, it was just brighter looking, but it certainly did not have that "faded" look. so i was sick of washing my hair a billion times trying to actively fade the blue, so i combined a bunch of fading treatments into one, and added my own touches to try and combat the dryness. the treatment i did used:
- 2/3 cup of anti-dandruff shampoo
- 2-10 vitamin c tablets crushed into powder
- 1 tablespoon baking soda dissolved in 1tbsp hot water
- 1/3 teaspoon honey
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons dish washing liquid (Dawn, Palmolive, Fairy, etc)
- 1 teaspoon 20 vol developer. i used redken's blonde icing developer which is very thick and creamy and has panthenol in it, idk if that makes any difference

i shampooed and towel dried and worked this through the hair for about 10 minutes, then capped it and waved a blow dryer over it for 5-10 minutes and let it set for about 15-20 minutes and a LOT of color was coming out! it faded to a steely greyish, mid to light toned blue. then, i did 2 color removers (one n only colorfix) and the black was all gone but i had a teal ring around my head, it started about 2 inches down, then went down another 5 inches or so. above that was a pretty buttery blonde and beneath that was a dark ginger.

then after a weeks worth of washing to make sure all the color molecules were out (i did a strand test with peroxide to make sure) and some moisturizing treatments and a protein treatment, i did a 30 vol bleach bath. all it did was brighten the teal. it lightened my base beneath that, so now i had a gross green in the same area. it went from a muddy bright seafoam to a dead leaf green. i tried another bleach bath mix on a test strand and it did not budge AT ALL. i was so afraid i was going to be stuck with green hair! i did not understand why it just wasnt going away! so, desperate, i figures i may as well try my combo fading treatment on it, what did i have to lose? so i did the treatment exactly as i mentioned above and it was GONE. about 90% gone, except for a couple spots i wasnt as thorough with, like behind my ear, a spot underneath, a a little bit my one of my temples. but i did an olive oil + coconut oil treatment a couple days later and it was gone! i was shocked! idk what it was in the ingredients that i used, or if it was just the whole combo, idk, but it removed what other fading treatments and even bleach couldnt.

i then did another 2 bleach baths + a lot of moisturizing treatments and protein treatments and my hair is now as you see it in my avatar and totally healthy 🙂

i should mention that i got the manic panic after midnight blue from sallys, and i got pravana from my professional supplier, salon centric all within the past 8 months.

pravana colors are very long lasting, especially the blue, violet, and the yellow took foreve to get out of my hair too. im wondering if its the pravana vivids that is the culprit

I used SFX blue velvet and it wouldn't fade at all, even with using various fading methods. It also took a lot of bleach baths to remove the colour and it still never came out completely, I just had to cover the blue tint with other colours.

Yeah I thought that it could be pravana too. The ones I've used have always been easy to get rid of but I've never used a blue from them.
I worry about the amount of people who think they're able to go from black to white in one sitting,  it then again it isn't my hair so I don't worry too much!
Thanks for the heads up though, I'm sure we will all be more aware when choosing blues. Hopefully someone will be able to tell you which colour/brand it is.

I always find the misconception of "I've never bleached my hair, I just use blonde dye!" confusing, I guess some people just don't really think past putting it on their head.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Pravana. I have seen a lot of people asking for help removing the purple (since purple hair is super trendy in NY right now). I have also seen it stated a number of times on other websites that you can't get rid of Pravana, only dye over it with black or grow it out and cut it off. This could just be due to most folks not being as knowledgeable about fading dyes but it could also speak to Pravana being different than other semis. It seems to last a lot longer with minimal fading and it's a really, really popular brand now. It could be the brand in question.

I was thinking pravana as well! hive-mind in action 😀

I agree about the whole "I never bleached" and people no realizing it has to be nearly white and often takes a lot of work and maintenance, which in turn upsets people once they've ruined their hair with a quick attempt. 🙁

ooooh... what about those Smart Beauty colours?

i am skepital of those, when i used the one step type ones they super duper wrecked my hair, luckily it was just the fringe and it grew out. Believe me I wasnt shy when i used bleach (I am now, thanks to this forum) but this truly was a product to destroy hair. That was the pink one, and I wouldnt touch them again. I've since countless times used salon peroxide bleaches in different volumes on the rest of my hair and it was in good condition, and still is.

Now I know youre talking about staining Scott, but they might be a culprit

I find Crazy Color blues, and ion, really rubbish and they just fade easy

i really think its pravana blue and violet. yes it was so so so hard to get out of my hair, but ive had clients that we have used those colors on them and they really just do not fade. when they come by for their next trim anywhere from 6-10 weeks later, the color is still very much there, it still dark, just slightly less saturated looking. with the other colors though its really not too big of an issue, they seem to fade pretty normally, but the yellow likes to cling on to the hair. even when its extremely faded, theres still a yellow tinge and it usually takes bleaching to fully get rid if it on pale yellow hair.

Having just read two threads on manic panic rockabilly blue, and then doing a little review search, it could be that too.

Thingy from little mix (is that what they're called) did her hair blue in the summer for those ultra brights, so maybe it's just that a lot more people are going full on blue to copy then regretting it when she changed it again, as I'm assuming she did because the ultra brights aren't very long lasting.
