Bit of an epic post... advice for a newbie?

Hi everyone, moderate hair dye n00b here! In need of some guidance and advice about going BRIGHT!

Background:

I've bleached and used henna and box dyes before but without that much success i.e. they didn't look that great, but I'm familiar with the actual dying process. I used to dye my hair Boots own brand Ebony Black (permanent) often; it always used to fade out to dark brown so was a good option to keep my hair nice and dark. I haven't used any dye on my hair in quite some time - although my ends are still tinged with red - I guess that's what I get for bleaching it without waiting for henna to completely grown out, it's been there for years!)

Now, I want to incorporate some bright blue (I'm thinking Directions Turquoise, heard it's better than Manic Panic). For now I think I want to do blue underneath, and maybe some around the fringe area (like, the long pieces that I keep down when my hair is in a ponytail, if you see what I mean) but keep the top of my hair dark.

My plan:

Bleach the bits I want to be bright
Use a white toner on top to ditch the yellowyness (how long after bleaching?)
Dye the bleached bits blue (how long after toning?)
Dye the rest of my hair a permanent or semi-permanant box dark brown or black (like one of those new foam ones, or nutrisse or something) as I don't like my natural brown, it;s a bit, well, patchy.

Questions:

Will this work?
Any alternative ideas?
How long do the bright colours last?
Can I just re-dye the blue when it fades?
Can you bleach over the bright dyes once they're in?

Lastly, can I dye it all dark brown if it all goes horribly wrong?!

Thanks for your patience, sorry about the million questions but I love my hair as it's so healthy and long, I really don't want to mess this up!

Peace,
BunnyGirl xxxx πŸ™‚

Firstly, i'd just like to say that you're doing exactly what i do with my hair except my hair has red in it!

Okay, so, I'd think that because you have so much dye over your hair, I'd try stripping the color first. With, like, Color Oops or Color B4. And, depending on how often you wash your hair, the color should last for about 2-4 weeks. And you can just re-dye the blue when it fades. And, yes, you can bleach over the bright dyes once they're in, but i don't imagine it will come out blonde. Just like an extremely lighter version. And, if you do bleach over the bright bits, you dyeing your hair dark brown/black will most definitely cover it.

Thanks so much for replying! Good to know I'm thinking of doing something that does work, hopefully I won't look like a total dork!

I'll try the colour remover first, thanks for the tip.  πŸ™‚

Would you suggest doing the bleach/blue first or the dark brown first? Should I perhaps do the bleach bits, rinse, wrap them in tin foil or some such, then do the brown? OR, protect the bits I want to bleach with foil, do the brown and then do the bleaching and blue-ing after?

When I do two colours I do them at the same time. As box dyes have a maximum developing time and veggie dyes don't then do the blue/turquoise section first, clip the hair you want brown out the way. Foil the turquoise sections as you go along to protect them from the brown you do later. Once the turquoise is in start the brown. When the developing time is up wash the brown out first, very carefully or else the excess will run into the turquoise. Make sure the water is clear before you unfoil the turquoise. After a day or two you may notice that some of the brown has bled into the turquoise but it shouldn't be too noticeable.

I've heard bad reviews about the colour foam, maybe try something else just in case that part goes wrong but everything else you mentioned seems fine and the right order to do it all in.

Thanks! That does make sense about the blue not having a development time. And thanks for the tip about the foam, I'll probably go with one I knew works ok.

I guess I'll do my bleaching and toning on Saturday, and the brown and blue on Sunday. Perfect. πŸ™‚ Fortunately I'm mostly doing blocks of colour so keeping them apart shouldn't be too tricky - I will be enlisting Boyfriend to do the honours. He's got quite good!  πŸ™‚
