Around the colour wheel - next stop, purple

Hi everyone - longtime lurker and new convert here  *1*

The road so far: I asked for an ombre and got a strawberry blonde dip dye. After months of making do, I went for Manic Panic's Fuchsia Shock as my first unnatural hair colour. I love it (so much that I'm keeping it for a while!) but it fades quickly and it fades very orange.

I have very long dark hair and my plan is to cycle through colours then cut it short, leaving only virgin hair behind (I fancy a change, but I may as well try out the rainbow before that point :P) The theory behind this is if I go pink -> purple -> blue -> green, they'll each have a decent base colour to fade over.

After hot pink I really want the look of Directions Lavender, so my question is this: should I go for a purple like Plum, or a purple like Wild Flower (with more blue) so it will fade to the attached colour (which I'd then top up with some Lavender mixed with something darker)? After Lavender I'm aiming for Wild Flower anyway, but if you guys recommend something less blue I'll make a pitstop! My current dye fades to a salmony ginger.

Thank you all in advance!

Edit: It seems like Plum has changed formula, so I'll replace it with Pimpin' Purple here.

I dyed wildflower and it always started as a very blueish purple then after a few washes was a nice strong purple but I found it faded very very quickly!  I also tried pravana which also faded quickly. Mine faded to a pastelly pink purple but that may have been as I had pink underneath.  So after only 8 months of having to dye my hair every 4/5 weeks I've moved onto blue!

The fade you've got in that picture is very pink, so a pink based purple is definitely the way to go.

I think that you will have to fully fade the current colour if it goes orange as lavender is quite a delicate colour. You may need to lighten your base a little further too for a shade as light as that pic (depending on how red toned the strawberry blonde was) Directions Lavender needs a very light base. Blue toned  lilacs will go sludgey grey/brown if there is orange in the base, so definitely stick to pink based shades, so best to sort your base now if you want blue based colours later.

Thank you all for your replies!

Hmm, decisions. I think I'll go for a pink based purple when I'm done with fuchsia (and possibly another blue-based purple - I'd like to stay dark for a while). I'd definitely love to go lavender though, so if and when I hit my murky fades I'll get a clean slate at that point. I've been worried about bleaching my hair, but I've only done it once before - if I bleach once, leave it on until I get it to a light blonde, then tone it, it shouldn't be too damaged right..? Or should I just get it lighter than its light golden brown? And does toner do anything on hair that's not already platinum blonde? Sorry for all the questions!

I'll have to switch from fuchsia soon since I can't ever spell it right... *whistle*

If you are concerned about the condition, do a strand test. it is impossible to predict how much bleaching anyones hair can take as it is very individual. If your hair was virgin when you bleached it a second bleach should be ok, especially at a lower volume.
As for toner, it depends what sort you mean. Most toners are for taking the yellow tones out of blonde hair, but 'toner' just means something that alters the tone of the hair without making it a lighter or darker shade, so you can tone any colour with the right toner. Green can be used to cancel our red tones for example.

Thanks again Pixie. I don't want to go too light with the purple so hopefully my base will be okay, but I'm happy to lighten it if needs be. I've still got some fuchsia shock left and I've just ordered some Directions Violet so I'm hoping to mix those for a pinkish purple before heading off towards Wild Flower. (I'll need to dye my whole head some day soon - I can't get enough...)
