Allergic Reaction from hair dye

Hi everybody. I'm new to this board and I am hoping some one can help me out. I regularly dye my hair red (L'oreal Excellence 4rm dark mahogany red). The most recent experience is that my head scabbed up pretty badly (due to allergic reaction?)  and I had to go to the Dr. to get a prescription for antibiotics as it was determined that I had a scalp infection.  Thank God it's healing, but I'm scared to dye my hair again. Has anyone else had this experience and if so, can you please give me some insight to your experience?

Does anyone know of a safe (or safer) alternative to my beloved L'Oreal 4rm? I know that henna may be safer, but I don't think it will give me the depth of color that I am seeking.

Thanks for any responses

To me it sounds more like chemical burns, but I can't diagnose.

To test if you are allergic you need to do a skin test.

Unscrew the bottles in the box and mix a small amount of the dye.
Tightly recap tube the tubes/bottles tightly
Using a cotton swab, apply a small amount of mixture to the bend of your elbow (approximately 1cm)
Leave uncovered for 45 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water
Lightly pat skin dry with a towel and leave undisturbed for 48 hours, you can put a plaster over the area if it helps
After 48 hours, look for signs of rash, redness, swelling, burning or itching

If you are allergic, it'll be most likely to PPD and that's in most permanent hair dyes.
