Hello ladies. I've been planning to dye my hair green and red for Christmas for a couple of months. I'm going to leave my roots for now and just re dye. I want to dye this weekend as my Christmas party is next Friday so I want to give a chance to settle in. I've been trying to fade as much as possible the past week, just with dandruff shampoo so far. I'm planning to use directions vermillion red and alpine green. I'm currently fading adore aquamarine. I guess the green will cover easily, but the red will go a bit purple where is hits the darker parts of my hair? Anyway, here's some pics and any advice on the best way to apply? Do one side then cover in clingfilm then do the other side? Will be doing the colour split down my parting. Sorry for the ramble!!

The red will go, at best purple and at worst mud brown. Off the top of my head I can't remember if vermillion is an orange or pink based red. If it's orange it'll really push it to the mud side rather than purple. Orange and green or blue make brown. I would say there's still too much green and blue in all your hair there for it to come out nice, but you could try a strand test.

If you can, fade it more. As a last resort, try the oil and bleach powder method to fade. There's a thread on it in the tutorials section.

Directions Vermillion is very orange based, so I agree with Janine that you will need to fade it a lot more. Directions Alpine Green is also very blue toned, so over your current colour you are likely to get a teal shade rather than a true christmassy green. You can remedy that by adding some yellow or a more yellowy green.

Thanks a lot for your advice ladies πŸ™‚  Will try to fade like mad first then!  If it won't fade enough I may have to just go green.  I have rose red as well, would it help to add some of that to the vermillion to pull it to the pinker side?

Thanks! I love it too, but had my heart set on trying green and red for Christmas :S

Hello ladies! This is where I've got to with fading. I think I'm going to have to accept defeat and just go green.  The bits near the roots just don't look like they'll budge.

How about dying random sections that are yellow in the red? Though, I would dilute both colours so the risk of the dyes mixing is lessened.

What would be the best way to do that? Put the red on, cover with foil then put the green around it? Would normal household foil do, or would I need the special hair stuff? Sorry for all the questions!

Yeah, that would be one way. Any foil is fine. I would just pick out a few bits at the front, don't try doing it all over.

Hmmm saw this after I'd already put the red bits in.  Did about 9 all over.  Also realised I didn't do a clarifying wash before and I put conditioner on yesterday.  Oh well we'll see how it turns out tomorrow πŸ™‚

So you dyed on conditioned hair?

Yep! Washed and conditioned on Friday and forgot to clarify shampoo yesterday before I put on the dye πŸ™ Still got the dye on now, and will rinse once I've woke up a bit.

Ah, that's a shame! It'll still dye, but it will fade very fast. But then, maybe you want a christmas colour to fade fast!

Yeah, never mind! Just got too excited and keen to dye. I like the result anyway, even if it's more temporary than normal πŸ™‚
