Adore Violet Gem - Advice & Tips

Hi Everyone  *waves*

I had a bit of a nightmare hairdresser incident last month. My friend has been doing my hair for a few years, and I was pastel purple for almost a year, but unfortunately she has hurt her back and is no longer able to do hair. By this point my hair was faded to silver. I decided to try and give the lengths a bit of a rest, and go bright purple with only the roots needing to be touched up and dyed over. Booked in at a well known salon, and ordered Adore Violet Gem from Beeunique based on some of the pictures I have seen on here.

It was a disaster. The hairdresser barely lightened the roots, and I ended up with a strip of purply ginger roots that were nowhere near the colour of the lengths, and almost all the purple on the lengths had washed out. She insisted on curling it despite me always having it straight, and I found out why once I got a good look at home. My hairdresser friend took a look, and said that the roots were not lightened enough, and I needed to go back and get it lifted more and redyed. I phoned the next morning to ask them to fix it, and when I got in the hairdresser had a serious attitude problem. She refused to lift the roots any further, and said that I just needed to keep reapplying the colour to the roots only to get the colour to even out, as there was build up. I left very upset, with the only improvement being the lengths staying purple.

I'm due to go to another hairdresser this week to get it sorted, and I'm just wondering if I could get some advice. I would rather do it myself but I have a disability and find it hard to even wash my hair, let alone try to bleach and colour it.

How light will my roots need to be to try and at least get the purple to cover? I am naturally a strawberry blonde - cliched I know but it's true! I know getting an exact match is difficult, but if I could at least not have a random stripe that's massively different it would be great lol!

I've been using my Bonacure shampoo on the Violet Gem, and it is fading extremely quickly - any recommendations for a good shampoo that doesn't leach the colour out?

Thanks for reading my ramble!

Ok. Tricky one for a couple reasons. Maybe easy fix for others!

Tricky thing number 1. Bleaching twice within four weeks isn't something we'd ever suggest. Bleach is very harsh and hair needs time to recover. So really you need to stick with it for now.

Tricky thing number 2. If you struggle to wash your hair, bleaching your own roots isn't going to happen. I almost never suggest going to a salon for bleaching, but I have to say now that there's not a lot of choice. If you see someone with very bleached hair that looks good, ask them if they had it done at a salon and if so, where and who. Best way to find someone who knows how to actually do it well.

Fixing the colour should be easy in my opinion. If your hair is strawberry blonde (why is that a cliche?) then it's really already light enough for violet gem. A light bleach would be enough for it to turn out bright, but also stick. Bleaching lifts the cuticle to allow the dye to stick/let the dye in. If it's fading more on the lengths (and why it dyed less in the first place) it's likely due to a lot more damage, cuticles are too open or gone. Readying the lengths would even it out more. Also, leaving it on for a few hours would help it not fade so quickly. I do suggest doing this yourself. Just put on some gloves, splob it on and just take some time to make sure it's all covered. Leave it for a few hours, put a bag over your head and a hat over that and sleep in it! (Make sure its off your skin though).

Why are you using bonacure still? It won't deposit as much purple as it strips. You'd be better off with a sulphate shampoo (better still changing to conditioner only washing) and putting some dye in your conditioner then leaving that on for 5-10 mins to rede posit some colour lost. It really does work well. Bonacure is great for blonde and light pastel purples for keeping the yellow at bay. Not worth it for proper purple.
