Hello!  *waves*

I am new here to the forum and wasn't sure if I should post here or the General/Semi-permanent section.
I posted here because I am showing off my hair, my reapply, fade and asking for some purple help  *puzz*

I am a newbie to the world of colour and finally decided to get my hair done  *1*
I wanted a sorta graded ombre purple effect that would grow out easily due to the fact that I am currently living in West Africa as an expat and you just don't get this kinda thing out here, so needed something with min care.
I recently visited a mate in Detroit and we got my hair done  πŸ˜€
The lady got the highlighting GREAT, she used the Manic Panic: Purple Haze.

It came off, got all styled up and we went outside, I like it very very much but I don't LOVVEEE it. I wanted PURPLE! It is much more red purple than blue purple. Buuut I was super happy at least I got a great base and can start from here. She gave me an extra pot of Manic Panic to take with me to reapply as needed.

(my fingernails turned purple blueish from running my hands through my hair)

Inside

Being totally new to the world of colour I thought I would only need to reapply in like 1 month.
Nope!  *nono* More like 4 washes later! haahaa!!
So I got my hubby to reapply after 1.5 weeks (what a sight!) just added it to a bit of mask and put it on, washed it out, alot of colour came off, and the colour held for about 3 washes. I wash my hair every 3 days, we were travelling alot at the time and exercising. I don't think I have a great shot of what it looked like after the reapply but it was def not as purple as the first time it was reapplied, more reddy.

It turns into a reddish colour all the time instead of just indoors when it starts to fade on the less highlighted pieces and a light copper/yellowish on the more bleached bits.

Which later (4 to 5 weeks) turns into a light coppery and a palomino yellowish.
This is a selfie from my brother-in-laws Pirate Party  *cheers*, the sun was behind and saw that I was able to grab an accurate shot of what it looked like....man selfies are difficult! What on Earth do you do with your face?! lol

(I wonder if my hair looked like this before the colour was put in? Like if it has completely washed out?)

Now I have returned to Abidjan, Cote DΓvoire in West Africa and went to the hairdresser to ask them if they could maybe highlight a few extra pieces of hair, as I was thinking that the lighter the hair the more it would hold the colour right? I have no freaking idea! It's all French speaking out here so being understood or explaining kinda depends on the hubby... and sorry men... but you guys are colour blind lol Lime Green = Yellow.

Well she did highlight my hair in a few places (after basiically forcing her into it) but her highlighting was that chunky sorta type, not my best, the idea is to be graceful ombre effect, not zebra chunks  *gun* buuut she put the remaining Purple Haze on and we heated the noggin up for about 25 - 30mins, washy washy and out my hair comes looking very similar to the original photo except more diluted due to not having enough dye. Zebra chunks nicely covered. I will try get a snap of it today/tomorrow and post.

Now I'm outta purple. I'm in a country who does not do purple.  *ott*

I have now done ALOT more research and I need some advise, I am looking for my bleached bits to be purple!

I just did not get this kinda purple, even though the above image is the image for MP:Purple Haze (confused).

I have to find a person that is travelling into Ivory Coast either from United States or UK so I can order to their address so that they can bring it to me lol What a story I tell you! lol
From looking at many pictures now of you absolutely gorgeous ladies I'm kinda thinking:
Adore Purple Rage, Directions Plum, African Violet?? Other suggestions advise?

In the mean time... anyone used good ol old school Gentian Violet for your hair??

*thx* for SUCH an amazing Forum!

The reason why it isnt coming out like in the picture above is because her base was probably much paler than yours. Your hair still looks towards the dark blonde shade which for purple haze is a bit too dark.
For a bluer purple, i would suggest diluting directions plum.
Have you checked beeunique.com for the dyes? They ship internationally as far as i know.

There are several ways of making your color last longer. Some of which are leaving dye on to process overnight or a minimum of a couple of hours. Add dye to your conditioner, using SLS free shampoo or conditioner only washing.... Etc.. There is a thread with more details on how to keep color looking bright and fresh,I am on my ipad so i cant get the link for you.

How light was your hair bleached? Those shades of blue purple/violet can only be achieved on very light blonde hair.
If you still had orange tones in your base then it will pull any purple more towards burgundy/berry tones. I think Purple Haze is quite a warm/pink based purple anyway.
Manic Panic is known for not being a very long lasting brand. I would try Special Effects or Pravana for longer lasting purples, Adores purples are good too. If you want that type of violet you will need to lighten your base further though.
To extend the life of your colour first make sure you leave it on for a long time. I find 4 hours to be good, or you can leave it in overnight. Rinse out with just water, preferably cold. Then wash as infrequently as possible in cool water avoiding sulphates. I prefer to avoid all shampoos and just wash with conditioner now.

Thank you very much on the advise on how to keep the colour lasting longer, I didn't know it could stay on for that long. *lightbulb*

I actually have no idea how light it turned out to start, they highlighted and I couldn't see the back of my head, then it was off to get lathered up and then under the heater, but I would say maybe a tad lighter than the last pic?? Which you are quite correct in saying, it def has a more coppery/orange tinge and not a yellow.
Dang it.
I guess I will just have to let my hair grow out a bit and add more highlighted strips as I go πŸ™‚
Going to be all sorts of purplish in 3 months time lol

I may be able to order through Beeunique (I will contact, some out of stock) but the problem will be customs, they will nail me to the cross on that. But hey! Why not try anyways  πŸ˜€

Gosh *thx* guys.

Btw, Have any of you ladies used Gentian Violet on your hair? You know the vividly bright purple liquid we used to put on cuts and scratches to help them heal? Can find it mostly in any pharmacy for like 50c.
The only thing negative will be that it dries your hair out a tad. Maybe I could try that just for the interim until I find a travel victim or place an order loool!

I've never tried it on hair but it is very popular for skin treatments in mexico so I can say it will most probably stain the hair but not sure it will last long or be any good for it. As you said, it will probably dry it out a lot which in turn makes color fade faster.

I have heard of people using it to make blonde toners, but not to dye hair purple. It is really hard to get hold of in the UK now, as it is not considered safe since it has been proven to have a carcinogenic effect in rodents.
