Hi Everyone, This is my first post!
A bit of info on my hair history first...I'm naturally a strawberry blonde but have been dyeing my hair for years and years. I ha it black for ages and then wanted to go back to blonde but after hating the hairdressers highlighting method i got impatient and used XXL ice blonde twice and 2 pre lighteners in 1 day and my below chin length hair started falling out! I had to wear sew in extensions for two years whilst it grew back...it was only just above the bottom of my ears.
Anyway it grew back fine and I stayed blonde for a while but got bored and had it done professionally at the hairdressers and went a deep cherry red. I had this done twice but when it faded I started dyeing it at home with XXL, a deep red with a purpley tinge to it. Its now a faded version and I want a full head of Directions Cerise mixed with Tulip. My friend has it and it looks so vibrant and gorgeous but when she bleached her hair it was almost white before the dye was applied so it looked fab.
My predicament is this....I have done a strand test (photo attached) using colour b4 (extra strength) two times in one day and also Jerome Russell lightener and although it has lightened it considerably I don't know how to get it any lighter. I don't feel this is a good enough base for the colours I want.
I also put a lee Stafford hotshot on to try and tone it but it didn't really work. when i was a blonde and my hair became brassy the hotshots were fab and made it almost platinum in two minutes flat!
Would it be worth me buying a white toner from manic panic or do i need to bleach bath or something? Obviously this is just a strand test so when I do it for real i might end up with bits more, or less, orangey.
Any advice appreciated! Oh, and as you can see my hair isn't in the greatest condition, although i had been laying down just before that picture was taken! π
Sorry, will post pic as soon as I have posted 5 times as it wont allow me to post π
You'll probably want to really deep conditioner your hair and wait a few weeks before putting your hair through more lightening techniques. I haven't used it before but a lot of people swear by Joico products which I think you can get on Ebay or Amazon. I would also suggest spraying your hair with a leave in conditioner or make your own my mixing a spoonful of condition with water in a spray bottle in the morning on days you aren't washing your hair.
Step one is definitely taking care of your hair. Heat also damages your hair so if you blow dry or use a curling iron often, try to let up on that a bit too.
I'll keep checking back for a picture and then maybe I can help more.
How is the condition of your hair currently?
White toner only works on the palest of blonde hair to tone it to white, so I wouldn't buy that if your hair is anything less than light ash blonde or platinum.
B4 works by opening the hair cuticles and sliding out the colour molecules. When you use permanent dye, it bleaches out your natural colour and deposits replacement colour. B4 will therefore take it back to a slightly bleached state. If you have red pigment naturally in your hair (which you do), the result is usually a shade of strawberry blonde or ginger.
If this is the case, you would probably have to bleach bathe once or twice after B4, however, I wouldn't do this unless your hair is back in top condition.
Joico K-Pak Reconstructor is amazing and will repair damaged hair. It does leave the hair a bit dry, though, so a good deep conditioner is required as well. Joico do an Intense Hydrator that deep conditions and helps smooth the cuticle back down, making the hair softer and stronger. Depending on how damaged your hair is, though, you might be able to get away with an Aussie 3 Minute Miracle conditioner--it's less than half the cost of the Intense Hydrator and leaves hair feeling really lush.
But I would definitely reconstruct and condition your hair back into amazing condition before you try any bleaching.
This is going by what you have written in your post, we will be able to confirm or provide more advice when we can see a picture of how it looks after the strand test.
Thanks for your replies guys π Funny you mention the Joico as I ordered a litre bottle of the K-Pak Repair shampoo and the same conditioner, and a tube of the reconstructor too a few days ago and used it last night after writing this post π You're right, it does leave the hair a little dry so I will get a deep conditioning treatment too. I'd say my hair is average condition? I'm not really sure to be honest. When I went to the salon a few months back they said it was in an ok condition to bleach it and after they did it, it was fine...no drier or anything. I think it just fell out that time due to all the bleaching I did in one day. Im just using an XXL lightener on my strand now to see what happens. My directions colours.....Cerise & Tulip arrived today π Will keep you updated x
Hey guys, Well I decided not to do my whole head afterall. The main reason being that in my job it's quite warm where I work and due to certain clothing we sometimes have to wear I end up sweating like mad...I know sweat & these dyes do not mix lol. I would be completely paranoid at the slightest bead of sweat thatthe dye was coming out. So I decided to do what I had done years ago, and that's put a big slice down one side of my head near my face so then I can style it different ways and incorporate it into my fringe if I want too as sometimes I have a full fringe fringe but most of the time sweep it to one side. Anyway, sorry for waffling on! I'm sat here with the dye in now but I took pics along the way to show how I did it and tell you what I used. π I will post the finished result once I've done my Vinegar rinse and washed it off π
1. Applied Colour b4 (extra strength). Left it on for 1 hour.
2. Folded foil and put a plastic cap on to retain the heat - important when using colour b4
3. After being rinsed & dried
4.The result after then using XXL Max Blonde 00B (said to lighten up to 8 shades). I left it on for just over 30 minutes, again with foil and plastic cap, but it didn't lift as much as I had hoped....anyone have any ideas why?
5. Directions Cerise & Tulip ready to apply π
6. Applying the colour, I have wrapped it up in the foil and have a marks and Spencer's bag on my head! Lol
Result to be posted shortly!!
So, so far so good...apart from the XXL not lifting as I had hoped....I expected my hair to be super blonde after reading it lifts 8 shades lol. Damn that stuff is bad for your hair though, even just after 30 mins, once I'd dried it my hair felt really dry. I was really impressed with the Colour b4 though and would recommend it to anyone!
Finished Result!......btw, I'm already "dye"ing to try a turquoise blue! Lol
Nice! I think it turned out great.
This XXL stuff is a lightener, right? So its basically pansy bleach. It probably wasn't strong enough to lift your color. But I love the way it turned out anyhow. If it left your hair really dry, I wouldn't suggest using it again. Bleach bath would probably be better.
Nice work!
It looks really good!
That xxl bleach you used is the strongest they do, the only reason I think it may not have worked is maybe all the colour b4 wasn't rinsed out therefore it could've reoxidised.
It looks great! I actually like it not being done all over too, it goes really nicely with the colour your hair was before π
Be warned though, if you want to do blue/turquoise you are going to need a WAAAAY lighter base than that though. It's a bit of a nightmare colour to get right so it takes some serious pre-prep work haha.
Oooh it looks gorgeous π
I don't know why the XXL dye wouldn't have worked, unless as Kitty said there were residues of B4 left. But it turned out lovely, anyway!
I haven't used XXL in a while and I can't remember what the max time is for developing. As my natural hair at the roots is very dark I always leave it on for the max time. Sometimes I find the last 10 minutes to be the most productive when bleaching. So if the max time is 45 minutes and you left it on for 30 you might have found better results in tha remaining 15 minutes.
But even so, it looks great!
Thanks for your reply guys π I think maybe XXL just isn't strong enough......I remember having used it in the past and i still had gingery bits, Ive just bought some 30 vol peroxide( a litre for Β£2.79!) and powder bleach from a beauty wholesalers. I also got a tub of petroleum jelly and a litre of colour stain remover. I'm Gonna go for it and do my whole head! But now I have the streak so I;m not sure if I just strip that with the rest of the hair and start again or curl it up in some foil and leave it alone?! Also I wont be using colour b4 this time as I'm worried about those darn molecules not being rinsed out lol. I'll bleach or bleach bath and see what happens . I don't know what bleach bathing is though so I'll read up on that first π
I'd leave the streak alone as you've just recently bleached it π The worst that happens is if it slightly doesn't match and just gives your hair more dimension.
Good luck! I'm sure it'll turn out great XD

Lol, it's too late now.....Ive stuck a 30 vol bleach on my head and the streak has turned neon pink! Lol. My permanent colour started coming off straight away before my eyes the moment I put the stuff on but the streak isnt going anywhere lol. Im most likley going to damage my hair real bad. My hair lifted to a very light orange/dark peach so I've just whacked another load on and am going to leave it on for a tiny bit. I want to give my hair a rest really before I use the directions stuff again but cant go out with peach hair! If it doesnt lift still, I have a permanent lightest ash blonde dye from boots, or a semi no ammonia/no peroxide up to 10 shampoos medium ash blonde....but on the box it looks quite dark? I dont know if they make a lighter one, that was the only blonde. do you think one of these will work over the peach colour? The neon pink streak will be interesting! Lol
The directions dye won't make it any worse. Just don't bleach it again for a while.
