I also have a bit of a dip dye look going on due to the effect of the henna on my previously bleached hair and on my natural colour, but it looks like it's meant to be that way so I'm not bothered 🙂

Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I think it's relevant to the conversation to ask here instead of starting a new topic.

I'm seriously considering going to henna just like Martha did.  I love the colour I am now using a mix of Adore Cajun Spice and Sienna brown, and it's a colour I'd really like to keep.  I do wish it were more permanent.  I'm getting tired of how much work it takes to keep it a nice deep shade.  I absolutely realize the commitment of henna.  I've been reading about it for weeks.  I'm unsure, however, if I can use henna the way I do semis?  Can I bleach bath my roots to get them to ginger and then do henna?  My natural colour is such a dark brown that I'm afraid henna would be lost on it.  I've never liked my natural colour... but I absolutely love being a ginger.  🙂

Henna goes fine over bleached hair, most of my hair was bleached when I first did it, all I noticed was it went brighter/faded a bit on the bleached parts but if that's the look you're going for then I don't see what the problem would be!

ETA: one more question.  If I'm bleaching my roots, is LUSH Henna one of those that reacts with bleach?  That would be bad.  🙁  I have a helper, and he's usually really good about not overlapping, but when the back of my hair is super short, it's sometimes difficult to avoid.

I'm afraid I can't comment on how Lush henna reacts with bleach as I haven't bleached over it, but I've looked at the ingredients and there doesn't seem to be any metallic salts or other nasties that could react badly.

Thanks martha!  I don't really ever intend to bleach over it, either.  I did a Google search and found little tidbits of info, but nothing definitive.  Some of the sites said you have to wait 4 after doing any kind of bleach/colour service before using henna.  Yikes!  I think to be safe, we'll just have to be really, really careful.  🙂

If you're going to get a sample and do a strand test, maybe cut off a small piece in an area that has the most weight to it so it's not as noticeable since your hair is short. You can dye it with the henna, then, to find your answer, you can do a root retouch on it. That way, since it's not on your head, if it does have an adverse chemical reaction, there's no way you could possibly get burned or injured from it.
