I decided to give the oilslick look a go on the underside of one side of my hair, I wanted something quite subtle (something like the shimmer birds wings have in the light), so I didn't pre-bleach.
My hair has a mid brown permanent colour on it at the moment (mostly underneath this it was bleached), and I just prepped the portion I was going to colour with a 50:50 mix of head and shoulders and 20 vol developer which I left on for about 10 mins just to open it up a bit and strip any gunk that might have stopped it taking. This did seem to fade it slightly to a more golden brown.
I then used 4 foils, layered horizontally and did 'woven' segments (pulling out alternate strands so that it wasn't just blocks of colour ). I used Directions Alpine Green and Directions Violet and mixes of the two, I think I did the bottom row a mix of 50:50 that made a navy blue, then I did a row of mostly Alpine with a bit of Violet, then a row of Alpine, then the top row was just Violet.
I'm really happy with how it came out! The first photo is when it was freshly done and in bright sunshine, then the other 2 photos are after a couple of washes and in normal daylight. It seems to be lasting quite well, and although it is subtle my OH said he saw quite a few women eyeing it up in the pub on Friday night (there's not a lot of bright hair around here haha!)
Please excuse my sleepy face, heavy post-St Patrick's day weekend!
That actually looks really good! I have been dubious about the whole oil slick thing but it has worked really well on your hair π
That is pretty.
The thing I don't like about most of the oil slicks are the greens and yellows that they use. You just know they aren't going to look good after a wash or two!
Thanks ladies π I deliberately avoided any of the sickly yellows, pinks and brighter greens some people put in them as I just don't like the look of them, I wanted a really subtle iridescent look. I think I latched on to the idea of oil slick but didn't really like the look of many that I'd seen so I did my own take on it. I'm really loving it and I'm surprised how well it's lasting!
