I've seen a lot of questions regarding root re-dying lately (and bleaching in general), so I figured I'd make a tutorial : )
To start with, my unwashed roots. Having your hair unwashed helps protect the scalp--bleach *will* eat through the natural oils and any product on it, as you will soon see! (FYI, my natural oils plus overhead lighting has made my pink very bright--it's more candyfloss than neon at the moment)
I love the XXL brand of lighteners--Platinum, Ice Blonde and Max Blonde. For these, I used Max Blonde (all the store had left, lol)
I don't section my hair. I start along the part and work my way up in .5 cm slices, using the applicator bottle tip as a comb to section. I squirt the box bleach along the scalp and use a tint brush to gently brush it onto one side of my roots, then put another line of bleach on the same parting and pull it to the other side. (Sorry that I don't have any pictures of this, didn't have a helper today so couldn't smear my camera with bleach hands).
You can see some of my section-strips here, and you can also see that shortly after applying XXL is already doing its magic.
Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic bag (just tie the handles around the bottom back of your head, like a bandanna.
Leave it for anywhere from half an hour to forty five minutes. I did in between the two. If your head starts to feel cool, blast it for about a minute with a hair dryer (I usually have to do this about once every fifteen to twenty minutes).
Wash with a clarifying shampoo to make sure all of the bleach is gone, tone and voila!
Your roots are now ready to dye.
*skips off to slather her head in pink dye*
aww thankyou! its good to see the results from xxl lightners on virgin hair, im guessing it wouldnt work on dyed dark hair?
Hey brilliant! you beat me to it lol! looking good, and loving the plastic bag π
I actually really like the effect going on in the last picture, you could totally rock that for a while.
the last picture is how my hair turned out after a bleach bath. I had a tonne of compliments :p
love the tutorial!
Hehe, thanks and you're welcome : )
Kitty, thanks, I did consider it because I quite liked it, too. I think I will have to rock a similar look (OH calls it strawberry banana) for a few weeks when prepping for turquoise just to make sure my hair goes light enough.
Meeshy, I wouldn't put it directly on dyed dark hair--I'd try to colour b4 the darker colour out and use what's left as a starting base, as you should be left with slightly bleached hair.
Nice tutorial. Although I used the Max Blonde last time to dye my roots, and it certainly didnt take my roots to as light as yours π
Thanx for this tutorial, I'm glad I know what to do now, I love the pink and blonde hair pic π
Great, thank you.
I'll try this in a couple of days with xxl max instead of regular bleach and brush.
It's reassuring that I can see the bleach overspill on your previously coloured hair, I feel that I didn't mess up so much last time, and this is inevitable. I think it just looked worse because I had just gotten a shorter haircut.
Love this! I looked the same today, but enchanted forest not pink!
Still can't decide whether to try this at some point when doing my roots.
very helpfull ima make sure to stock up on this product
Brilliant,thanks!
This was very helpful! I will definitely try this next time as my current ways of root touch up are not working so well...
How do you get the roots in the back?
Thanks!
Glad people are finding this helpful π
Vegan, I usually have a partner help me with the back. When I do it myself (like I did for this one), I go by feel and double-check with a mirror. I've been dying my hair with applicator bottles for ten years or so now, so I'm pretty used to getting it all covered. When I think I've done it all, I grab a hand mirror and hold it with one hand while lifting my hair in small sections with my free hand. If I see any missed spots, I just put my "search hand's" fingers on it, set the mirror down and grab the bottle and put some more on.
