Keeping your hair healthy in the pool

This is my first tutorial(or tip?) so if it's a bad one i am sorry xD

Summer is comming again and if you are like me you can't wait to get in the pool again!
But for people who dye theyre hair as we do( bleaching, crazy colors etc.) it can be a big problem that there is chlorine in the pool( green hair, dry hair, losing color etc.)
Well this is how i keep my hair moisturized and keep my hair as fibrant as possible without resorting to haircaps that won't keep all the water out and just look terrible(atleast on me xD)

Chlorine is verry drying because it opens the cuticles( if you write it like that?) and breaks the natural oils in you're hair, to prevent this i grab my jar of coconut oil and literally drown my hair in coconut oil before i go swimming.
Because it is greasy i put my hair in a braid to look as good as possible while going to the pool.
You're hair is like a sponge and because your hair already soaked up all that cocnut oil there is not alot of room for chloride water.
Now after you enjoyed your day at the pool and you go to the shower wash you're hair with your favorite shampoo as long as it is moisturizing.

When you get home and you take a good shower you wash it again and then use a good moisturizing hairmask( if you have a crazy color put a bit of the dye you used in the mask) and then you let it air dry with a leave- in conditioner.
I noticed that i had a minimal lose of colour and my hair feels soft and is shiny instead of dry and britle.

That sounds good. My only issue is my hair is too short to braid so it would just have to be greasy. πŸ™

Is this with or without a swimming cap? I find that even with a swimming cap my hair comes out damp at the edges, and I want to know how to best fight the chlorine if I plan to start swimming regularly.

I did this without swimming cap but it can also help when you use a swimming cap for the edges

What would be even better is to wash out the oil with conditioner! It's surprisingly more effective than shampoo πŸ™‚

I totally agree with the coconut oil, I do the same thing for when I'm just outside all the time but it's great to know it works well for pools/chlorine too. Thanks for sharing! Janine's input is great too, you should try it! I usually use just a thin, cheap silicone free conditioner like Suave's Tropical Coconut or Cure Care Hair + Skin conditioner. You just slather it on right over the oil, work it through so it feels more conditioner-y and less oily. I let it set for 15-30 minutes, depending on how oily my hair still is, then rinse it out in warm water

Would it be beneficial to rinse your hair with water before using the coconut oil to seal out the chlorine/seal in the water?

i put the coconut oil on dry hair because i want my hair to be soaked only with coconut oil.
if i would make it wet first then my hair would already be full with water and there would be not much room left for the coconut oil.
so i would say no :3.

Are pools cool with this? I haven't been swimming for years but I've been thinking about it but I didn't know if they would be ok with the coconut oil because it might get in the water.

It's not really soluble in water, which is why it's good for this, so there wouldn't really be an issue. Even if it did come out a little, you've put a couple of tablespoons worth in your hair maybe, probably a lot less? That's not a lot. There's probably more natural body oil in total on all of the people swimming!

The water is continually filtered. Chlorine would break it down pretty quickly.

My hair colour tends to come out a lot after using coconut oil πŸ™

Swilks, I've heard of people using conditioner in the same way if you don't want to use coconut oil. I don't think it would work as well but it's worth a try.

Debdeb, if that was the case, no one would be able to get in a pool because of the sunscreen or tanning oils we tend to use.

Oh holiday pools! I was thinking like swimming baths, because you're supposed to shower before going in to remove lotions Etc aren't you?
