i know this is probably a silly question as it's right up there but... if i bleached my hair and it went through the first stages of being quite orange/slightly yellow, if i put blue dye on it... would it neutralize it? and if so, to what colour?

If you only used a small amount of blue dye in a conditioner it would neutralize it and it would go a mid brown, but it's not a very nice shade of brown. It's just enough to look more normal than brassy orange.

If you dye it as normal then the blue will mix with the orange (like paints in a paint pot) and create a weird green colour. So it's down to quantities of dye.

A little dye neutralizes the orange but a lot of dye just mixes with it and creates a new colour.

This all makes a ton of sense and is very helpful but I have a sort of random specific question...

A decent amount of random platinum or white blond tutorials say to use a wella color frosty ash for desired toning to platinum, and to use it on the mega pale yellow bleached hair.  When I looked at the color it said the base was blue. Technically wouldn't that just turn your hair green? I'm curious cuz I bought some but I'm a little nervous to use it. lol I would think the lightest ash color to take your hair from yellow to platinum would be purple or violet based.

If it's a specific Ash toner you should be fine. The base may be blue but that doesn't mean there's no pink in there to make it lilac.  If it's just a blue shade of toner - no specific blonde colour mentioned then proceed with caution.

I see, it is an ash color.  I decided to go ahead and try it out and it neutralized my hair a little but not much.  Purple based toner seems like the way to go for my hairs.

Everyone's different. What works for some doesn't work for others. At least you figured a way to get your hair nice and pale.

ok, so Im striping my hair and Im fully preparing for it to be ginger/orangey. I used a red xxl colour, so if I wack a blue toner on it, will it restore the hair back to its lightened state? The colour I used lightens as it dyes I didnt put a bleach on it.
Iam I right in thinking this?

Adding colour to colour won't lighten it, just neautralize it. In other words it mixes like a paint pot and turns a brownish colour. If you want it lighter you'll have to strip it all out with dandruff shapoos or colour b4 or use bleach.

oooohhhh ok. HA I think I'll leave it up to the hairdresser, Im pretty sure if I let myself loose on my hair with bleach it would only turn a brighter orange.

I don't know about turning pink, that's a new one for me. You can try colour b4 if you want to start from scratch without damaging your hair. Be careful to rinse out the colour b4 extremely well before adding the next dye though, if you don't rinse properly the new dye might turn black. I would say use colour b4, wash your hair twice a day for two days then dye it.

My hair is currently orange. If I use a blue toner, it will presumably go brown, right? Can I then BLEACH that brown to get a (totally orange-free) white/blonde? Will that damage my hair?
(Basically I'm just desperate to get rid of this orange....!!)

Hi,
I need a little help ladies and gents. My hair has been just about every colour under the sun. My hair was bleached blonde with cerise pink by la riche directions on top. I've faded my hair as much as possible with anti dandruff shampoo and have done one bleach bath and my hair is now a very pastel pink. I'm leaving it another couple of weeks before I bleach bath again but I know the pink tone will still be there. Ideally I want to go back to a pale blonde and I can see on the colour wheel that I'll need a yellow green toner/dye. What sort of colour would that be an ash? I'm stuck as to what to use  *anyone*

the dye will sit on your hair in layers so most likely if you put blue on top and bleach again you will end up with another shade of orange, it's best to wait bleach again and tone it once you get a lighter color, I'm in the middle of the same process and look like a pale apricot with platinum roots haha
