When do you buy your hair colours?

Just curious...

Do you see one you like and buy it so you've got it for the future when you can work out how best to use it?  Or do you work out what you want, then buy them?

Do you spend a fortune on a colour collection so you've got lots to play with when the mood takes you?  Or do you have a clear vision and just get the ones you need for that?

So far I've waited til I know what I want then buy (and wait impatiently for it to arrive!) - but I'm soooo indecisive I'm seriously thinking of stocking up on a selection to use as and when I feel like it!

I usually buy them on a whim when I suddenly decide to change colour, but it is annoying having to wait. Usually though I have old half full tubs of things left so I often use them πŸ™‚

I see nothing wrong with stocking up on some dyes that appeal, when they appeal, if they're a good price and not taking up too much space.  You have them on hand, you might just get some grand ideas seeing them in your cupboard everyday.  Alternatively, you may have a completely new whim one day and be on the hunt for a brand new colour!

I admit I do the same with clothes and jewellery and nail varnish and makeup, ha ha.  And new whims still come all the time!  I think that's really the fun of it all.

Since I stick to the same colour for a while, I buy my dye about a week before my roots are due to be done.

I have a huge stockpile.  If I see a color I like, I buy it in bulk.  lol.  I have enough dye for 2 years probably.

Since I tend to stick to reds, I usually buy about two to three month's worth of dye at any one time.  The actual colours ... I like to experiment, so I will buy a couple of bottles of dyes I would like to mix to see what happens.  I've done lots of experiments by now, though, lol, and I've come up with a combo I like.  Unfortunately, that combo is of SFX dyes (Nuclear Red and cherry Bomb), so I've decided on my next experimental colour which I'm going to be ordering up at the end of the week (MP Vampire Red with Directions Pillar Box Red.  Possibly Directions Poppy depending on stock levels by Friday!).

I try to use up most of the dyes I have in stock before buying new ones, though.  Sometimes, if it's darker shades and I feel like being brighter, I might leave a few bottles for a few months.

I buy about a years worth of dye or so, sometimes more, on each purchase. I know -more or less- what I will be going for and dyes I don't like or don't use I send off to my sister (I sent her poppy and that other yellow a while ago, I don't see myself going red or orange).

I usually run down to the last few dyes before I have the urgency to buy more.

I always plan what to do in advance, then buy the needed colours. Repeat.

This means I have loads of opened tubs and bottles that I've only used once or twice, but I love that because it gives me great subtle mixing possibilities. A little dash of this, a splash of that, I always feel like I'm making some sort of magic potion, haha!

I've been sticking to pink lately, so I can vary a lot within the pink range. Keeps things interesting!

I plan what I'm going to do and buy accordingly.

Then bleach my roots, fade my hair etc. After that do something totally different so I always have a massive stash lol

I tend to base my colour choices on what odds and ends of old dyes i have lying around lol
I used to keep a stock of all my favorite Directions colours in, but now I won't be buying any more Directions so I will have to put some actual thought into it.

I like to always have a full rainbow of dyes, I always have Pravana Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet. Their pinks are awful though so after the first tubes of Magenta and Pink I haven't even bothered to buy more. Their dyes, aside from the green, are all really neutral and great for mixing because you really don't have to worry about what their base color is at all. It's just nice having them around in case I have some unusual toning to do, or to mix in with whatever other dyes I have. For my hair though, I pretty much buy as needed. Though when a bottle/tube gets halfway gone I get anxious and want to buy more of it just in case lol. Usually I plan out my colors, wait to see how bleaching/fading is coming along based on how it's came along already, then I buy. I have so much piled up though now (especially pinks! lol), I have enough dye to last me years.

@Swilks 7 bottles of Virgin Rose!!! I am so jealous!
