I think it looks like a really pale diluted pink based purple (not new plum!!) Over light ashy brown hair.

I disagree a little. I would say you could get it with a diluted slightly bluer purple over very pale roots with yellower ends but washed with a purple shampoo.

Not an easy one to achieve on purpose.

ah thank you guys!! assuming i go with Marthakin's advice, are there any ash brown hair dyes you recommend? i read in another post that the ones sold in regular stores aren't really a "true" ash brown.

how much should i lighten my hair for the ash brown? if it turns out too yellow-y/brassy (after lightening), what toner should i use? sorry for all the questions! i'm a bit of a newbie to all of this.

No, don't go out buying an ash brown! What colour is your hair now? We need more details about your hair history and then we can advise on how to get it. Seeing a colour on someone else doesn't mean the same applies to you 🙂

hehe sorry, i get a little too excited about things and get too far ahead of myself. :p

i actually recently got my hair cut, it's currently about the length of your hair in your avatar, Janineb. I'd say about 50% of it is new growth that I haven't done anything to colour wise, so it's a medium-brown colour.  The rest of it has been dyed and is currently a reddish brown(?).
