What am I doing wrong? Hair color advice? :(

So after 10+ strand tests with various colors I purchased from Sallys (inc. One n only Argan oil, Age beautiful, Wella color charm..) I am still not getting a good result 🙁

I am using a 20 Developer as per instructions.

My hair is coming out a gingery color, particularly at the base of the hair, this color is the same regardless of what brand I have used?

The only difference I saw is from using the Wella range  (8a & 9a) there is a nicer ashy color on the remainder of the hair strand but it is still the gingery color at the base?

I would really appreciate some advice on what I am doing wrong, is it I am not leaving the color on long enough to lift the roots? I think I left it on for 30 mins as per instructions.

I would be so appreciative of any advice!  *thx*

What colour is your hair and what colour are you trying to achieve?
It sounds like you are trying to go too many shades lighter than your base, 20 vol with a permanent dye really can only take you up about two levels, hence it is going gingery on your virgin hair.

Thanks for your reply Wicked Pixie, I guess it's a dark blonde color. the color is gingery on the hair that was dyed as well? I had it done at a salon a few weeks ago and it came out that color, any strand tests that I have tried since, seem to come out the same color? I am wanting to go to around a 8a-9a color.

Are you keeping the strands warm when testing?

Can you post a pic? is it too dark or just too warm in tone? Some hair history would help too. What are you trying to change?

Hi Janineb
not sure how to keep them warm? I guess my hair is just at a regular temperature?

Its not too dark, just very gingery  🙁

I have had it regularly highlighted/lowlighted & dyed in the past with no problems.

I was just short on time this time so couldn't get in to my regular hairdresser, the lady who colored it I had not seen before, but I did warn her that it seems to pull very golden?

I have used some demi box dyes (Loreal brand) which did come out quite nice but still had quite a Strawberry blonde tone to it.

I am looking to just go a med - light ash color and to get rid of the ginger  😮

I have tried the toner range in the Wella brand and that didn't seem to do anything either?

Tint won't lift tint, so there is no point going over  with another colour if it is a lighter shade. I am still struggling to understand exactly what  you have on your hair atm, so it is hard to advise. To get rid of warmth and go ash toned you need to lift to a shade lighter than the result you want. You could try a purple toner, but again hard to advise without a pic.

I mean by keep warm, are you covering it or just leaving it dangling (if still attached to your head) or leaving it uncovered on a table. But it sounds like it's something else anyway. Strand tests going cold is very often the reason for  them not working.

I just leave it dangling, but I am interested for the future though by your comments, as I am assuming by this you are indicating that the head should  be wrapped after applying color?

It can depend. I always do, but I often have a cold house (well, others tell me so, I don't feel the cold as much as others it seems!). I see you're in Florida, so then it depends if you have the air con on?

Yep the AC is normally on, so maybe I will look at doing that in the future.  *thx*
