Are there any rules to follow whether you should use warm or ashy hair colours depending on your skin tone? I can't figure out what would look best!
There's the whole "finding your season" thing, but I've never really put any great amount of stock in to it, to be honest. I fit the "winter" profile, but yellow and pastels look awful on me.
I fit Summer but it's not 100% right for me either. What you could try is taking a cold toned (a blue or a green or something) and a warm toned (a red or pink etc.) piece of fabric/clothing/curtain/whatever and keeping it next to your face or tying it around your neck, and alternate them. This often gives insight in what range looks best on you.
I only knew when I dyed my hair green and I instantly looked ill, haha. Sometimes it's trial and error.
They say the ultimate test is to look at the veins on the inside of your wrist/arm. If they look greener, then you're warm. If they look bluer, then you're cool.
I've tried for ages to figure out what season I am and can't tell! And my veins seem to be between green and blue, lol. All I know is I've always liked cooler, ashier-toned hair on me, so maybe that's the answer... whatever is your preference!
P.S. When I was like 15, I remember absolutely loving the book by Carole Jackson, "Color Me Beautiful" (I think it was called), probably memorised most of it. It still didn't help, lol, but it was such a fun book!
My veins (what I can see of them, anyway, they're tiny) look like a bluey-greeney-grey.
The shirt/paper thing is a good idea--helps you figure out how certain colours look against your face.
