Uneven hair colour (years of build-up) what are my options?

Hi there all πŸ™‚

I have dyed my hair between basically 3 colours for many years: blonde, brown and reds (occasionally). For the last year I have been using mostly dark brown but the red/ginger tones always come through really fast. I tried something ashy (or so I thought) last time and the only change was a weird yellow tone to my roots. I often 'brave' it and try what I have in mind, but I have a wedding to attend on Sunday and not much room for error.

Currently:
Mousy roots (im not Grey but it almost looks light brown/grey), washed out brown lengths (ginger tones) and dark ends. Its not too dissimilar to this kind of situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mGnPMZQPBU

My ideal is to go somewhere like my natural colour and aim for healthy hair once I have the base is this too ambitious for just now?

My other option is to go with my usual Iced Coffee (dark brown) which I love but I only get a few washes before red tones shine through  *ott*

I have done the whole Black to Blonde thing before  with boxed pre lightener and box dyes and it went well, but I care much more about my hair health now than I did back then.

Thank you so much for any help,

I would start by using colour removers to try to get rid of the build up of dye that you have on your lengths. They are non damaging and can be used up to three times, which I would suggest doing in your case as you have a lot of build up by the sounds of it.

Once you have done that, you can work out what you have to do to get to your desired colour.  If you want an ashy but not super light colour it might be a case of toning your lengths, but you may need to bleach or bleach bathe to get the result you want.

So go with the colour removers for now, and assess the situation once you have done that.

Thanks! The colour remover was what i was considering, I was just worried about getting a decent result before Sunday, I wasn't sure if I would be expecting too much.

I actually also forgot to mention I have long hair almost to my lower back, are these same as regular dyes, as in.. You generally need 2 boxes for long hair?

Also what is it OK to do on top of colour remover (bleach, semis, permanents), and how quickly? I have read a bit on it but feel I got mixed info. Thanks so much!

Yes, you will need 2 or 3 boxes. I have bra-strap length hair and need 2 to cover evenly.
True semi dyes are safe to use right after. ( ones that are NOT mixed with anything)
Anything with developer/peroxide or anything that needs mixing is not. You need to wait at least a week between color remover and anything with peroxide.

Part of making sure your hair stays healthy, is making sure you take your time. Wait until after Sunday or you'll end up doing something bad :/

Thanks guys πŸ™‚

I have to say my gut feeling is to do the dark brown for Sunday which is going in completely the wrong direction to what I'm after but I don't want to rush it and ruin my hair :'(

I guess I should maybe try a different brown then, even more cool or ashy to try and combat these red tones.

I'm quite gutted, I love that dark blonde look I posted earlier :'(

If you want an even result by the weekend without compromising your overall goal, i suggest putting a dark brown semi on, I've been using the adore semi's for a few months now while i grow out my bleached hair & go back natural (I figure this is the best way for me to grow my colour out without having to suffer major roots & i hope that the semi colour on my virgin hair will pretty much fade out by the time its all virgin) this will achieve a nice result for the weekend without processing or compromising your overall goal as you won't have actually processed your hair.

Then once thats started to fade you could do your colour removers and consider your options from there based on what you have after that.

I've only ever used boxed dyes... So this is a stupid question I'm sure: Do I just buy the adore stuff and apply to my hair, or do I mix it with something?

I just read that you apply adore to towel dry hair, is this correct?

I like this idea though, I have needlessly used permanent dyes for years because I find in  general shops in the UK the semi permanent choice is terrible. I just found adore products online in the uk, if I can get fast delivery, ill give it a go.

The instructions are all on the adore packaging. But no, it's not mixed, it's used straight from the bottle. You can mix it with a little conditioner to help if you find the consistency a little thin. Try www.beeunique.co.uk
