Top it up or embrace the fade?

Slight hair dilemma for you.

I work offshore, mostly in the North Sea.  In just over a week I'll be going on a job that means living on a boat for 4-6 weeks.  The shower water onboard is likely to be quite heavily chlorinated.

My dip-dye is now 3 weeks/washes old (I usually wash my hair just once a week) and seems to be fading pretty fast from deep dark inky blue to currently a rather nice mermaidy blue with green undertones.
It is going to fade green.  I know it.

The question is should I ...

1 - allow the fade to continue?
2 - top up the dye before I go?
3 - take dye with me to top it up on the boat?  (tbh not really practical, a LOT could go wrong)

I'd embrace for now & top up before you go. Then by the time you're back you'll be ready for another colour!  ;D

Depends.

Do you mind faded hair?

With you be with people you care about seeing you with faded hair?

Do you mind green hair?

Its likely it will totally fade out again by the time you're back, is it worth it for it to fade very quickly and be back where you started?

Is it worth fading out totally so you can try some light colours when you're back?

Lots more to think about really πŸ™‚

Some very good points there Janine.

I'll be working & living with not just my own colleagues but the ship's crew, ROV crews, various other survey people and techs and also the client reps  :/  so a few friends and a lot of total strangers.

I personally don't mind the idea of faded and/or green hair.... I think at least part of what's bothering me is the idea that it might fade to something that I'll hate and be unable to change for weeks, which will distract and frustrate me.  I really don't think taking hairdye onboard a boat is a sensible option though.  Better to have weird hair than have a dye disaster.

My other fear is being NRB'd for any reason (Not Required Back).  Being seen as unprofessional or offending the wrong person can trigger that, and it's a HUGE stain on your record.

A bit of banter from the crews onboard is fine though  πŸ™‚  and I would like it to fade right out to nothing, I want to see if Aquamarine will take, on the ends at least.

Do you think you could fade it enough to put a purple on before you go? Then you wouldn't have to worry about the green, and purple is one of the most accepted unnatural colors.

I agree with this completely. Its a good idea.

It's not the green that bothers me ... green is fine.

What bothers me is the idea of it going some weird slushy muddy vomit colour  πŸ˜›  which I'll then be stuck with until I get home.

I've still got a few days to decide, and if I want to top it up I can do it at the weekend before I go.  I'd probably use my purple-based blues again and take it back to inky blue.  Not going straight purple though because I quite like the mermaidy greeny-blueness I've got going on  πŸ™‚

Plus it's only a dip-dye, not my whole head.

Could you mix up some dye into your conditioner to keep it topped up whilst away? Then you won't have to worry about fading whatever colour you choose. If you go with Adore Aquamarine it lasts really well and can go over your current fade.

I'm not sure about putting dye in my conditioner ... does it really work?  How much do you need to use?

I have this feeling that to do anything to the hair I'd either have to put a lot in, or leave it on my hair for ages.  Am I wrong?
I don't have a lot of time to faff with my hair offshore and I'm very worried about staining.

I always aimed for an amount that wouldn't stain my hands lol not very scientific. Yes,  it really does work. I would do my cleansing conditioner and rinse out, apply the coloured conditioner, clip my hair up, finish my shower, get out and towel dry then rinse with cool water over the bath. I never timed it but that routine was long enough to keep my blue truly blue and stop the green shades coming back.

I agree with Wicked, if you're worried about it going mucky. Dye in your conditioner will really keep it topped up. I will usually do a similar routine. Wash hair first add the conditioner then leave it in until I've finished my shower.

Welp.  Looks like I'm going to be embracing the fade because I haven't had time to do anything with dye.

Oh well!  I'll take some pics to document it as it goes along.  See you in a few weeks  πŸ˜‰
