The Anatomy of Human Hair

Good Day, All,

I am a formulator.  I formulate bath and body care products.  I used to have a small business where I sold the things I made.  These days, I formulate mostly for my own family and to give as gifts (soap, sugar/salt scrubs, lip balm, lotions).  I never got into the science of formulating conditioners... I wish I had.  Perhaps I will someday!  But, one of the resources I've used to learn was a forum for folks who formulate from home.  Many have successful small businesses that they run.  There have been some super knowledgeable and helpful folks there!  One was a chemist who posted under the user name "Lab Rat."  He provided a wealth of information for us home formulators.  Sadly, he passed away a few years ago.  πŸ™

While researching some info on fatty acids, I came across this article written by Lab Rat about the anatomy of human hair.  I thought it would be nice to share with those who are interested in learning more... in fairly understandable language for the lay person.

I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for this πŸ˜€  I didn't know about the particular chemical bonds of hair (didn't really pay attention in chem class), but it makes perfect sense as to why hair is weaker when wet and why vinegar rinses are sooo good for bleached hair!  I knew pH balanced shampoos/conditioners had acids in them, but didn't know the specifics about how it all worked before πŸ™‚

You're most welcome!  I'm happy to share.  It was definitely a lightbulb moment about the vinegar rinses, too.  πŸ™‚
