Hello everyone π I've got the beginnings of an itchy scalp/dandruff problem, which I haven't experienced for a while. Before I started bleaching/dyeing my hair with SFX I would have used Head & Shoulders, but now I don't want to fade my hair so I'm looking into other options. A friend of mine recommended diluting some tea tree oil (of which I have a huge bottle) with some oil and rubbing that on my scalp and leaving in for a few hours. Since that method would be free for me as I have everything I need already, I'd love that. The only worry is, will this fade my hair colour OR even worse, hurt my bleach damaged hair? I know tea tree can be drying on skin if you use to much, but though I'll be diluting it with a carrier oil I'm a bit worried about damaging my dry hair. If anyone has ever used tea tree oil/heard about its effects on dyed hair I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! π
Any oil will fade hair color, and tea tree more so. It shouldn't damage your hair at all, though. Some people say that coconut oil has helped with their dandruff as it in theory prevents the over-colonization of yeast responsible for most cases of dandruff. In any case, it should fade your hair less than a Head and Shoulders-type shampoo would. π
I would give coconut oil a go as it has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties and is really moisturising for skin and hair.
I have terrible itchy flakey scalp and co washing and coconut oil soaks have really helped. It's still itchy sometimes but nowhere near as bad.
Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely give coconut oil a go, I love the way it smells too π
Interesting, I've had on-and-off scalp problems (I was on prescription shampoo last year!), I wonder if adding a wee bit of tea tree oil to a coconut oil scalp soak would help?
Hmmmmm.
I don't know what TTO would do to hair colour but any drying effect should be countered by the coconut.
Coconut oil is ... well, an oil, whereas tea tree is an essential oil, which means you use wayyyy less (5 drops at most for your whole scalp, diluted in shampoo). So it's not going to compare to the "washing off" effect of an oil (like coconut) you'd apply everywhere on your scalp. I use it from time to time, diluted in shampoo as I said, and noticed no difference in the fading. (FYI I wash once a week and maybe use it once every 2 weeks).
But I wouldn't use it before dyeing because of the possible residue that may prevent a good hold of the dye, I suppose.
I'd read anecdotes where people had said that it faded their dye and colorists said not to use it, but now that I think about it, they were referring to shampoos that were marketed as containing tea tree oil so who really knows what was doing the fading. Thanks for sharing your experience, Muza! *thx*
