My scalp has been desert lake bed dry for years, possibly due to an underlying medical issue (working with a doctor to figure it all out). It is so dry it cracks and flakes. I have a thick layer of dead dry skin that won't take a hike and it makes it impossible to really moisturize. My whole body has skin like this, but I am able to scrub it off. No matter how much I try to scrub with my fingers I can't seem to get enough off to moisturize effectively (and I wind back up at square one again).
Short of shaving off all my hair, does anyone have any suggestions for exfoliating my scalp? Please don't suggest dandruff shampoos since they exacerbate my dryness and shampoos in general tend to make my scalp soooo dry it cracks and bleeds.
There are some scalp exfoliating products out there atm, more towards the high end of hair care:

or you could always make your own and add more moisturising ingredients like honey etc:

I do hope you find a solution, I get psoriasis on my scalp sometimes, only small patches, but it drives me crazy! I cant imagine a whole head of it! I feel for you!
EDIT: You can always try coconut oil treatments on your scalp between exfoliations, it does wonders to dry skin and will make your hair feel nice too!
Thanks. The Philip Kingsley one seems interesting. I'm hoping I can find it somewhere with cheaper shipping. In the mean time I might try the brown sugar DIY, hopefully I won't get sticky hair.
My scalp isn't terribly fond of coconut oil, if I over use I get a few pimples. Olive and Jojoba oil work well- when they can get though all the gross dead skin that is. When I use coconut oil I try to keep it on my lengths and put it up, I have spots down my neck right now because some dripped down and I was lazy about washing it off.
I have a client whis scalp is like yours and these things are what works best for her:
-she CO washes, and a few times a month, but only if her scalp isnt bleeding, she massages vinegar into her scalp to help balance the pH. Over the course of about 2 1/2 months the thickness of dead skin/built up flakes dramatically reduced. It went from very thick, cracked, like a bottom of a heel, to just a little thick. I saw a big improvement!
-avacado oil - she massages this into her scalp with olive oil mixed in, especially after using the vinegar. She uses a food processor with fresh avacados + olive oil to make a thin paste consistency, wraps it in a cap/cling film + a skull cap overnight. Sometimes if her scalp is extra itchy or feels very sensitive shel put some aloe vera in it too.
Palmer's now do a range of products for hair and once of them is a roots spray which is meant to help with dryness and itchiness. I use it when I bleach my hair as my scalp gets dry and itchy and it seems to do the trick. Not sure how it would fair on very dry scalps but its not expensive so might be worth a try.
I bought mine at Sallys
Lush make a scalp treatment as well, called SuperBalm. It does have coconut oil in it, and by the sounds of it, your scalp is quite sensitive to a few things, so I'd check the ingredients list on their website to see if it would be suitable for you first.
Lush also do something called snake oil or something. It's a pink bar with an s on it. That's really good for dry scalps too.
I think they've discontinued snake oil - I've used it before, and it was good, but it used to be in the Hair Treatments section of their website, and it's not there anymore. π
Oh bum, sorry. I had it years ago for my psoriasis and it was good. Hopefully they'll bring it back in one of their 'retro' sales.
My scalp isn't too sensitive, just to harsh surfactants, too much coconut oil (it is known to be comedogenic), and tea tree oil. Although the coconut oil usually only winds up effecting me at the hair line because it can't get through all the dead skin crust. D:<
Super Balm sounds worth a try even with the coconut oil and lavender (I haaaaaate the smell). At this point I'm willing to try just about anything. I have a spot at the base of my head that is just driving me mad at the moment. It's flakier than a pastry and feels so rough.
The only plus side to having a crappy scalp is when I bleach it never winds up getting on my living skin. I'm a bit worried about doing my roots if/ when I get this under control.
I just read that rose oil has anti inflammitory properties to it, maybe try massaging some into a part of your scalp to see if maybe that will help? Its supposed to be great for relieving discomfort and swelling related to psoriasis, dandruff + certain other medical conditions. Idk i read it and immediately thought of you π
