Styling short hair - specifically faux hawk

So I'm going to have to start learning how to style my hair of a morning rather than the old brush'n'go. Yikes! Never had to do this before.  *puzz*

I have already ordered mini-straighteners for my cowlick, but what products or techniques do people recommend for drying/lifting/getting my hair to go up and stay up? It's going to be about three inches long I reckon...

For stuff like this I think Redken Guts (10) is a godsend lol. It's unlike any other volumizing foam/mousse I've ever tried, it doesn't leave the hair feeling weighed down/sticky/stiff + it doesn't look like you have a product like that in your hair if you know what I mean. It's like a foam, you apply it to damp hair focusing at the roots, and blowdry your hair in the direction you want it to go, I usually just use my fingers. It lifts and seperates each hair, giving it a really nice flexible hold + some texture so the hair doesn't just look/lay flat. This works really well for styles like this, where you're defying gravity lol.

Also, to help actually finish the style in, Bed Head's Manipulator is fabulous. I heard they changed it from what it used to be, so I really don't know how this new formula is (damn all these companies changing their formulas! lol), but I'm sure it has to be similar at least to the old one. The traditional product is like a goopey consistency lol, I've never found anything else quite like it. It reminds me of the 'science experiment' you would do as a kid with corn starch and water, but thicker. If you can get your hands on some or if your hairstylist has some, try it out! It gives great hold and doesn't make the hair look wet or hard at all, it still looks soft and natural
