spotty scalp

:-[ Anybody else ever had something like this?

I seem to be breaking out in spots on my scalp all the time lately, my scalp isn't itchy or flakey and the spots don't seem to have anything in them but I have loads of them all at once.

They seem to get worse if I don't wash my hair every couple of days or if I wear a hat, what can they be?

hmm... blocked pores? Some kind of infection? I really don't know! Maybe see if a pharmacist can recommend something? Probably best to see a doc tor though.

The only other thing I can think of, because it used to happen to me when we lived in the country, was gnat bites. They were exactly how that sounds. But seeing as you said it's worse when you wear a hat, I just don't know.

I have a similar problem! I thought it was just due to that time of the month but I've noticed that I still get them other times during the month too, my mom told me she had a client that had some kind of fungal infection and that she applied a anti-fungal cream to her scalp and that it helped tremendously, so I'm going to try that this weekend and I can let you know if I see any improvement.

But I think Janine is right, a dr might be the right way to go, I'm just going to experiment with the cream before I spend a bunch of money on going to the dermatologist! I'm just being cheap though, lol!

I was wondering if it could be some sort of infection myself, at first I thought they were blocked pores but I've been keeping my hair clean and brushing it a lot and they haven't improved (plus not to be gross but there doesn't seem to be anything in them).

Thinking about it now, I first noticed them about 5 weeks ago when I stayed in a hotel (I originally thought they were an allergy to some cheap hair grips I bought to pin curl my hair with) but I wonder if I could have caught something from dirty bed linens? (the hotel was pretty shoddily run, we ended up putting in a written complaint about a few things, which they ignored!).

Let me know how you get on with the cream Emmer, and I'll try and get a Doctor's appointment for next week and I'll let you know what they say!

Have you ruled out headlice then? They can cause little bumps.

That was one of my worries, as I also stayed at the house of someone with small children around that time, but I've been running my hands over my scalp constantly the last few nights and I've not felt anything stuck in my hair. I might nip in to see the pharmacist when I'm in town tomorrow and ask them to have a look. I'll be fuming if I have!!

ugh yea lice is the worst, it went through my family when we were all young kids. But that actually reminded me of something else it could be, which is mites. However I believe mites are sometimes itchy so if your not itching then its probably not that, but my friend had an outbreak where they were actually in her hands and she had little red bumps all over her palms and fingers, they didn't itch her too much, she said it was more painful than anything and they gave her a hydrocortisone cream that helped take care of them, so I think there's probably a few things it could be, I just cant be sure.

Go to a chemist and see if the pharmacist can suggest anything. They can be really good for (hopefully) less serious things like this.

I went to the pharmacy yesterday and then this morning but there were loads of people waiting so I'll have to try again in the week! I did try some T-Gel shampoo that I had left over from when I had a really flaky scalp once and it does seem to have shrunk the spots and sort of dried them out so I think it might be Seborrheic Dermatitis, as I suffer with that on my face too, and around my nose is very sore at the moment (I put some of the T-Gel on that too and it's soothed it a bit) so I'm thinking I'll grab some more Coal Tar shampoo this week and use that a few times and see how I get on. I have had a good think too, and it seems to get worse if I leave my hair wet for a while or if I tie it up when it's damp which would make sense as to why it has flared up now my hair is longer as I do tend to tie it up a lot.
Emmer, maybe you could try some Coal Tar shampoo before consulting a dermatologist?

Oh, as for the lice, I combed through with a fine tooth comb the other day and didn't find anything so fingers crossed it's not that!

Ah yeah, definitely a possibility. I'm pretty sure it's not lice, but it's always one worth ruling out lol

I did the anti-fungal cream on my hair Friday night right after my mom trimmed up my hair and by Monday morning it has decreased both the size and amount of my red bumps. I'll let you know how it goes the rest of the week but I think I have my solution!  *1*

I don't use a lot of products in my hair except for 1 thing I use regularly which is dry shampoo for my oily days between washes. So I'm going to try a different dry shampoo along with weekly treatments with the cream and fingers crossed my scalp clears up.

My mum gets a similar thing whenever she is stressed, almost like spots you'd get on your face but on the scalp. She has psoriasis too occasionally. Could it be a stress related thing do you think?

Emmer, glad to hear you had some success with the cream! I got some Polytar shampoo yesterday so I'm going to use that for a few days and see!
Glitterpix, I never thought of that, it could be actually as my boyfriend has been quite poorly and I was really worried so I haven't really been sleeping and stuff. My face did break out too and was itchy and sore around my nose but that has gone now so hopefully my scalp will follow suit!

May I ask where you get the Polytar shampoo? My boyfriend has bad dermatitis on his scalp all the time too and he finds t-gel no longer helps so wants to try something new.
