my hair is just about waist length now, and the very very ends seem to be splitting- the last quarter inch or so. i think its a function of the length, as opposed to chemical damage because i do not process often at all, and i trim pretty regularly.
anyway, i did a serious search and destroy mission to get rid of splits yesterday, cutting above where i saw damage, and i already could see more by that night. ...am i doing something wrong? are my scissors not sharp enough or something? i really dont want to lose that much length, since my hair is in great condition otherwise, but im not sure what to do!
Blunt scissors definitely do more harm than good. I would cut the last half inch off if it were me, otherwise just keep going with the S&D sessions, I always need to do them in more than one session to get all the splits i miss the first time around.
Like Wicked Pixie said, the sharper the scissors, the better, and it usually takes a couple of search and destroy goes to get the majority of splits out.
One little trick to catch hair that has split a bit further up is to twist a section of hair that's about an inch thick. Smaller hairs will stick out at the sides (as even hair that's not layered won't be all one length; we have hair falling out and at different stages of growth all over our heads). You can then see if any of these shorter hairs have split and deal with them.
I second the twisting the hair method. Make sure there is a brightish light too as it will make the whispy bits easier to spot.
I've never heard of the twisting thing, what a good idea! But yes, it definitely sounds like your shears aren't sharp enough. I hate when you cut, think everything is good, go back and check to make sure you didn't miss anything and realize you have more splits than you did to begin with! Ugh, wasted length, so frustrating! lol
