Should I use colour on top of box dye?

I need a little help, I used a box dye red and now, only a few weeks later, it looks more like red-brown. I want to get a brighter red again, so I got Manic Panic Vampire's Kiss. But should I try to remove the previous colour or just dye straight on top of it?

I was thinking of using Colour B4 and maybe a slight bleach bath about a week or two later (and some hair treatments). Thing is, my hair is fine and in an ok condition (little to no split ends). I'd rather do as little damage as possible since I'm growing it out.

There's an additional issue, my hair is a dark ash blonde naturally, so I wouldn't know what to do with the roots once it starts growing back.

Any advice?

It really depends on how dark it is now and what sort of red you want.
You can get a great red over a gingery base, you definitely don't need blonde. If the box has deposited a lot of brown tones then the colour remover will help, you won't have to bleach for a bright red

It's a bit dark, and I think it looks a bit brown. It's Schwarzkopf XXL Red Passion.

Yeah I would rather avoid bleach so maybe just Colour B4 would be a good option. I've had good results from it in the past removing the same brand dye. Usually turns out blonde with a ginger tinge.

Ideally I'd want the red to be quite bright, perhaps not as much as someone who's bleached their hair but more than what I've got now.

I'm also a bit concerned about what to do when my natural hair grows out, I've tried dying over my virgin hair before with semi-perm (Adore's dye) and it didn't end up nice at all, it was like a red translucent gloss.

A  good red dye like Special Effects or Adore will cover an imperfect base really well, especially if you don't want pillarbox bright.
You will have to process your roots to get the dye to stick, so either use a box dye or a quick bleach bath. Hard to advise without a pic. Adore is notorious for not sticking to unprocessed hair, other brands may stick better.
