Semi-permanents over grey roots - help please!

Hi : )

I really hope someone can help because I'm sure there's an easy answer, but I can't find it here or anywhere and am going mad googling!

My natural hair colour: dark chestnut brown with annoying sprinkles of grey, especially in really obvious places like my parting.

My current hair colour: blue (my hair is bleached to platinum underneath) with about 8cm of brown/grey roots as I'm growing it out. My hair length is roughly mid-shoulders.

My questiion: how do I get semi-permanent dyes to stick to the grey hairs?? I've used Directions Poppy Red over my dark roots and it looks fine - apart from the fact it just hasn't taken on the greys.

Is there a gentle pre-dye treatment I can do to the roots in order to make the greys accept the semi-permanent dye?

Is there a semi that works on grey hair? Suggestions?

I don't want to use a permanent dye as I find them drying. Also, I like Directions and find it gentle.

I'd prefer some quick and easy method as I'm a busy mum and not very patient! : D

I googled to see if I could maybe use a very, VERY mild bleach eg that lightened only one shade, but all I found were tales of hair falling out or complicated dodgy-sounding home recipes.

Help me, please!

TIA : )

You can use a cream peroxide alone in a low volume for 10 minutes.

Or a mild bleach bath. You can find a tutorial for bleach baths on the forum if you search. A bleach bath would be easier to control. It's going to be slightly "drying", any process to make dye stick to grey hair is going to make it feel dry as it roughens up the cuticle. Using a good conditioner will help and it'll recover very quickly. The trick is to use a low volume peroxide and work as quickly as you can without being messy.

Semi dyes, unless they are really demi dyes and contain peroxide (directions are actually what are known as direct dyes), won't stick to grey hair as it's cuticles tend to just be too tightly sealed that the dye just won't stick.

Thank you - and sorry for these (very) stupid questions, but...

...what's a low volume cream peroxide (I've only ever used box dyes from high street chemists to bleach my hair and just stick to the same one) and where do I get it? What's the lowest that would work?

..I have some left-over boxes of Schwarzkopf Absolute Platinum. What would happen if I mixed it up but didn't add the booster powder? Would that work? Would it make a super-gentle bleach or would it just not work?

Thanks again for replying  πŸ™‚

Don't mess with box dyes, adding things or leaving stuff out. It's not worth the risk of what might happen.

Peroxide is what you mix with bleach. You can get it on Amazon or in Sallys. Look for 10 vol/3%. You can get it in liquid or cream, cream is easier to work with. You'll also need peroxide for a bleach bath. For that 10vol should work, but if it isn't good enough get some 20vol. It's pretty cheap and lasts for a long time, so it's worth it.
