Rooty ombre?

Once my colour has faded I'm thinking of doing a dark to silver ombre. I don't want the ombre to star  far down I want it quite rooty looking, how Kylie Jenner use to have it when she had the Turquoise coloured hair. I'm just not sure how I go about doing it.. I know ombre isn't a neat style as it is & I can do it on my extensions but as I don't want a great deal of colour at top I'm worried I shall some how make it look awful lol. Has anybody watched any good videos or have any good in depth tips?  I won't be doing it for awhile yet but really want to have an idea of how I'm going to do it.

what i do is that I do the dark color on top first. Using a brush, I dye the first 2 inches of hair in sections ( as if I were bleaching my roots). Once all the roots are done, I start from the bottom layer and do the lighter color using my gloved hands and just go over the dark bit a tiny bit to blend the colors together.
It is actually quite simple, more time consuming but not difficult at all. And if they are colors which blend well then you shouldnt have a problem of it looking bad.
