Edit to add: does anyone get their roots done by a hairdresser? Can you even do that?? And how much do you think it would cost? My roots are awful and I can't do them myself. Normally I just end up overlapping tons but I'm trying to grow my hair now so I don't want to do that πŸ™

Don't do it. It costs quite a lot and they also overlap. When I had it done earlier this year the hairdresser practically scrubbed the brush into my scalp as he worked it in in an horrendously over zealous way. And then leave it on too long. I had it done by different hairdressers twice earlier this year as the time came at the same time I needed a haircut. I thought, I'll give it a go! Thought, surely some of them know how to do it and I've seen good results from them on Instagram (in one case I realise now, of course, I'm not seeing the full story). I won't again. I've only just grown out the over processed hair and the burns I had on my scalp from the scrubbing was enough for life!

Last couple of times I've been to the hairdresser I've been watching the other stylists do root jobs etc and, yeah, they all overlap, leave it on too long and apply on the scalp.

Thanks Janine, I'm glad I know that, I would have been so upset if I paid someone and they still messed up my hair. I decided to man up and try to do it myself and it came out ok, so now I guess I just have to practice.

Yay! It is all about practice! You'll be an expert one day πŸ˜‰

Really been loving short pixie/undercut styled hair at the moment & been going in & out of thought of seriously wanting to get my hair chopped off, then back tracking & thinking about how long it's taken me to get my hair to the length it is after having short hair a few years back. Since CyberPunk posted her new hair cut its made me even more eager to cut my hair off as she's got a lovely cut & she looks so beautiful I think it suites her perfectly. Deep down I know the best thing would be to cut it off as it needs it, but the other part of me just can't part with my (get this) shoulder length hair. Which also makes me feel like it actually shouldn't be a big deal cutting off! Lol. Sorry for the ramble I'm just so torn at the moment. On the other hand though I ordered a nice blonde wig the other day which should hopefully be with me end of the week  πŸ˜€

Maybe go shorter in increments? Go for a shorter bob, then a classic chin length, then ear length with it cut into your neck.

Though really, I'd just say go for it.

Marthakins if you knew a hairdresser you could totally trust, id give it a go. My hairdresser offered, i never took her up on it as I taught my husband but, if I didnt have him, I'd probably have to. But i trusted her.

I had my hairdresser do my roots when I went in for my haircut last week.  It was really nice - she was able to get it all applied in 30 minutes with almost 0 overlap, so I just processed for another 25 minutes and was done.  When I do them myself it takes me 2 hours because I do it in sections since I take so long to apply it.  I would love to just go to her for roots only, but she charged way too much, especially considering I brought my own bleach.

I'm nervous about doing my first full head bleach πŸ™ I'm due a badly-needed haircut too as it's been 2 full years since it was cut in any way. I want to try the ponytail haircut again, but want an undercut again too, only problem is no hairdresser has been able to do an undercut properly for me in the past and friends are too nervous to try πŸ™

Soooo, I'm contemplating bleach bathing my roots, bit scared because I have dreads now, but on the other hand might be easier since my hair is basically sectioned. I promised a friend I'd grow out my hair though, because I've known her since I was 13 and been dying hair since 11. So she's never seen my natural hair colour properly. Hmmm.

I did slap on some directions alpine green on one dreadie to see if it turns a lovely teal colour (because they're a lighter blue) and did a small section of my fringe too. Looking stylish with foil around those parts. πŸ˜›

See if you can find a barber for the undercut--they tend to do them much better than most stylists.

Without thinking I mixed a big old dollop of Cerise with Purple rage when touching up my roots (I'm used to adding it to counter the blueness of the new directions plum). Now have bright, bright magenta roots which look awful with my weird, yellow-grey skin >: It wont be a bother to fix of course, but I felt so oddly self conscious at work today. Not that anyone else would notice or care. Weird dat.

I'm absolutely inlove with my pink hair & I wish to stay colourful for quite some time, but I usually have the odd moment where I really miss my dark hair. Never again would I go black but I don't know if it's because winter is coming but I'm loving mid to dark brown hair. I also feel like I can't wear certain clothes as it just doesn't look right with my hair colour. Recently I purchased a wig, but it's blonde so have been thinking maybe to just buy a dark brown wig to satisfy my craving of brown hair lol. Does anybody else get like this?

I never really want natural colours but I do start dreaming of colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel a lot. Like at the moment I'm blue but I'm kind of dreaming about bright yellow hair. It would be so hard to get rid of all the blue and not end up with green though πŸ™

What will strongly-chlorinated water do to bleached/dyed hair?

I've heard that it turns bleached-blonde hair green, is that true?

Overly chlorinated water can. I remember once when I was a kid, there was a village in Devon where the water supply was accidentally over chlorinated and all the blonde women went green tinged! It can also be very drying, potentially damaging and it'll strip colour from dyed hair.

It really depends what context this is though. If it's a swimming pool or hot tub you should be ok unless using it often. You're always better protecting your hair with a cap if you can though. If it's something different, it's hard to say!

Thanks Janine  πŸ™‚  it's shower water offshore.  I'll be back out there from monday with my new dip-dye 'do.  I only wash my hair once or twice a week though so fingers crossed it won't go too weird.

Not 100% sure what colour I'm going for yet, depends on the outcome of the bleach.

(edit)
....  well the bleach result is underwhelming  :/
Next stupid question - does the "don't leave it on for longer than" time count from when you start applying the bleach, or when you finish?
(I counted it from when I started)

kitebunny, the time is from when you first apply the bleach. That way you won't overprocess the areas that you started with and end up with bad damage. That's why it's important to apply as quickly as possible; some people have another person help them or even do sections of their hair separately. Getting your bleach on within 15/ 20 minutes is ideal.

About swimming, you can always coat your hair in coconut oil or conditioner to help block some of the water, or if you feel like being extra careful you can tuck that into a swim cap. If your hair isn't dyed with a semi you can use a chelating shampoo to prevent/ remove the green from hair after swimming in chlorinated water. Have fun!  πŸ™‚
