putting hair up while wet?

when i was younger (maybe twelve years old), i used to take showers at night before bed.  i had fairly long hair, and instead of blow-drying, i'd put it up in one of those big claw clips and let it air dry overnight.

that stopped-- one night, my father told me that tying it up while wet like that would cause it to ROT.  from then on, i left my hair down to dry, THEN i would put it up afterwards.

here's the funny part- i still dont tie it up while wet, because im not entirely sure if he was right!  he might be- it makes logical sense?  (does it? lol)

anyway, my hair is so super long, now, that it takes a while to dry and its uncomfortable to leave down while air drying.  so, my silly question--- is clipping my wet hair up safe?!  lol

If your hair will dry while clipped up there's no harm. I suppose you could get something like mildew if you clipped it up and left it like that and it never dried for days. I think that tale is more urban legend than fact.

I don't like to put wet hair up because it can cause damage.

Yeah, it's rubbish. As Spooki says  it could get mildewed, so it has that damp mouldy smell. That'll be where it comes from, the mouldy smell. You'd be better off braiding it. My hair would never dry that way as there's too much volume, but if it dries when it's up for you it would probably be ok. And that way you get mermaid waves πŸ™‚

I can't ever get my hair to dry if it's tied up! And if it's wet when I go to sleep then I wake up with a bit of a headache head cold thing. So that's why I don't do it!

i have hair that is mid thigh length.  when i wash it in the evening, i keep it wrapped in a towel for about half an hour an hour, then i put it in two plaites (like wednesday addams) i wake up and it always dries with a beautiful wave in it in.

if i wash during the day, i do the same of wrapping it in towel for a while, then wear it down when i walk to work, so it kinda gets a blow dry naturally :p by then its dry enough to do stuff with πŸ™‚

This is what I sometimes do too, put it in two plaits once it's no longer dripping wet and leave it dry overnight.

I think it depends on your individual hair.  I'm like Glitter; if I go to bed with my hair damp, it's usually still a bit damp by the time I wake up.  Lots of people tend to put their hair in braids before going to bed while it's still a bit damp, though!

hm. my hair is just past my natural waist, so i guess its not super long-- just longer than i've ever had it! but it IS super thick, and it dries with a bit of a wave.  i'm actually not sure if it would completely dry if i put it up it while wet!  mildew smell sounds gross though, so maybe i'll just keep letting it air-dry while down?  i'm at a loss when it comes to taking care of hair this length, i've never dealt with it before!

Can you french plait? Mine is too thick to dry if I just plait it, but if i french plait it in two plaits more hair is warmed by my scalp and it does dry more. I get crinkly ends if i go to bed with it wet these days, no idea why but it looks awful lol.

i can-- maybe i'll try that next time i wash.  another silly question, though: how do you tie the ends of the plaits while your hair is wet, though?

I use scrunchies so i don't get kinks.

ah!  i use little claw clips, usually, to avoid damage...  but scrunchies make loads more sense if i'm going to be braiding, though.  less risk of breaking my hair than id have with elastics.  thanks!
