could someone please educate me on the whole protein and moisture thing? it seems like there is some delicate balance between the two, in order for the best results to be yielded. i actually had no idea the two were different...i thought protein alone was a moisturizing/hydrating treatment!
also could i get some recommendations on products for each category (protein and moisture). i've heard of joico k-pak deep reconstructor and aphogee (i think both these are protein?) and i already have the redken extreme protein treatment (comes a blue jar). i haven't seen much change with the redken so am looking to order either joico or aphogee...would love to hear peoples thoughts on the two. any moisturizing products to i should check out? also what exactly is a moisturizing/hydrating product? olive oil or coconut oil? or are those more on the protein side as well?
lastly, could someone recommend maybe a hair care regimen that incorporates both protein and hydrating products? i currently wash my hair 2x a week, and alternate conditioners between the Redken treatment, Macadamia deep conditioner, and Loreal total 5 repair. i just started getting back into hot oil treatments (basically warm up coconut oil and keep it in my hair overnight). i used to love to heat style my hair but only when it was virgin/healthy...i dont plan to heat style it for at least the next several months, though to reduce further damage.
i posted a topic not too long ago describing my hair situation...basically had amazing ombre in May, went for a touchup in August and the girl completely fried my hair, i then had to dye it dark from someone else and she got the color right but cut really awful layers, then finally in October i went to my regular stylist back home (am living abroad for work) and he put balyage in my hair, which i wanted/liked to bring back warmth to my face, but it obviously wasn't a good idea to process again...so now i'm just experiencing a lot of breakage. have been trimming the ends on my own (and plan to continue to trim) and seeing a TAD less breakage than before, but i think my hair needs some more TLC. thanks!!
Protein is for hair which has lost its structure, as in when your hair gets over bleached and stretchy or candy flossesque!
Moisture is for when it's dry, not necessarily damaged but just angry. I often will do a protein treatment (only if my hair needs it) then follow with a nice moisturising treatment ad it's quite drying.

thanks for your reply! what exactly do you mean by stretchy though? like when it's wet or dry? i haven't really "tested" my hair if it stretches while wet...but when i get out of the shower, it feels "normal". in the past few days i've kind of been obsessing over my hair and trying to test it, so when it's dry i'll take one strand and pull it from two ends...sometimes a hair is stretchy (i would assume some elasticity is healthy?) but then sometimes it just snaps off (which i expect after having been processed a few times in the past 4 months).
maybe my hair is just super super dry and needs a lot of moisture and not as much protein?
Well, if it's stretches and snaps easily, then that's what she means. If it's been processed a few times in a few months, then it's likely to be very damaged and would benefit from some protein.
However, you can actually make things worse by using too much protein. In fact some of us, including me, have to be very careful. Even when my hair is very damaged I can still only use a little protein or my hair goes brittle and dry.
I also have to add, protein isn't a miraculous cure. If your hair is badly damaged, which it may well be, then nothing is going to fix it and you're better off getting the damaged parts cut off. If the conditioners you use have silicones in them that's that is just masking the damage and would even stop the protein you're using getting in the hair.

oh, okay. well when it's dry and i do the "pull test" or whatever it's called...the hair that stretches does not break (i mean if i pull it hard very enough then of course it will break, but generally no). the hair that does snap off, just snaps off without stretching first. i will keep up the protein treatments, but in moderation so to not make the hair brittle and dry like you said.
and also i had no idea you had to follow up with conditioner/moisture after protein! (omg, so embarrasing.) when i have been doing that Redken protein treatmeant i just wash it out and then get out of the shower. :-[ ๐ฎ i will make sure to do conditioner/something hydrating when after i do protein.
my hair was/is for sure damaged (so sad) but i had already cut off like 3/4 (maybe 5..i have no perception of length) or so inches back in August when this disaster happened and i'll be so depressed to lose more length! it definitely was not a good idea to get more balayage at the top, but i have been trimming end and damaged parts on my own ๐
i ordered the joico k pak deep penetration reconstruct and then also the joico moisture intense hydrator...have you had any luck with these products?
