perm or semi perm dye on dreads?

So I've had my dreads about 3 weeks or so now, and my roots really need dying (I didn't think to do them beforehand -.-) so I'm just wondering would I be better to use my usual directions ebony or a permanent box dye? Since I've heard conditioner can stop new dreads from locking up. Any thoughts.      Thanks πŸ™‚

I've always used permanent box dyes on my roots when I've had dreads, but I'd recommend waiting as long as you possibly can before dyeing your roots.  I held out for six weeks before the greys in my roots got so bad that  I had to dye them!  I wouldn't imagine that Directions would be much of a problem, even with the conditioning aspect of it, as long as you're just doing the roots, and not using the dye on the lengths of your dreads.  The root hair won't be dreaded up yet anyway, so you should be able to colour it with a semi without destroying your dreads (obviously, you need to be careful about the dyeing process, try to 'disturb' your dreads as little as possible throughout the application and rinsing process).  However, I have only ever used a semi on the lengths of already established dreads before, never on just the roots, so this is just assumption on my part, not from experience!
Cue Matty or KneeHighSusan to jump in with advice, as they have more experience of dyeing dreads than I do.....

You should be okay, though I would usually advise as Mindi has done to wait a bit. Gracey's work looks very solid from what I've seen. Just rinse your hair for about ten years afterwards haha. I find if I have even the tiniest bit of conditioner or vegie dye in my hair it doesn't dry properly. Have you washed it out yet, would like to see πŸ™‚

yepp all done, and my dreads are still solid as ever (il wait as long as possible before doing it again though- its been about 3 months since i last did them), i rinsed until the water dripping from the ends was clear and it dried pretty fast so i think it went fine..... and my roots aren't showing now πŸ™‚ and i would post pics but its just the same colour again :p

Thank you both for your advice ^^
