Hi all,
In the beginning of April I had went to a friend of a friend who claimed to be a professional hair colourist for 13 years. I didn't think anything of it because she colours my friends hair and her colour (red, RR@ALL) lasts for 4 months. I went to her because I wanted to dye my hair a purple ombre, with dark purple at the top and a very light purple, almost grey, at the bottom. She made me change my mind on the light purple, saying I'd have to kill my hair in order to get it to that colour, and so we went with your typical colour purple that you think of when you think of purple (on bottom).
She lightened my hair, I don't know the brand, I just know it wasn't bleach and it didn't take long for me to go from a medium brown to a blonde. I can't remember the brand she used to do the purples, but she was only using this brand since January. The colours she had mixed looked great. But when she washed out the dye, she said "we have a problem, your hair didn't take to the dye." The top half of my hair was a hot pink and the bottom half was rose gold. She did not apologize once and just kept blaming my hair. She then switched to Elumen VV@ALL claiming that this was the darkest purple on the market and that it was the only permanent dye out there.
Well, she dyed it and it came out like a magenta colour but where she does hair, the lighting is horrible so it looked like a purple and I went home. Once I got home I noticed the magenta and freaked out. I asked for her to dye it again free of charge or give me my money back so I could go elsewhere. She offered to do another coat of Elumen the next day. We did that and it came out an acceptable purple, but still nothing like what I had went to her to do. That was $140 CAD and two days down the drain.
The ends (which were rose gold base) quickly faded to a pink colour with rose gold poking through after about 2-3 weeks, and as time went on complete sections of the lower layers of my hair were completely rose gold. I redyed my hair with Elumen VV@ALL - I ordered it myself because I didn't want to go back to her and couldn't afford to get a salon to do it judging by what she charged me - and obtained the colour I was going for the whole time (dark purple). I also used "Lock." However, after some time, the blonde started to poke through again on the ends so I coloured my ends two days ago. Now the bottle that I purchased is almost empty and I am wondering if I am always going to have to dye my hair after a few weeks? Also, as mentioned previously, she claimed that VV@ALL was the darkest purple and that Elumen was the only permanent colour on the market. After going through websites when I was looking to order the dye myself, I found that people have mixed Elumen's black with the violet to obtain a dark purple and that Elumen is only semi-permanent.
Can anyone offer advice on what to do to get a dark purple that will last long? I don't want to be continuously dying my hair for a colour that will only last a few weeks. Will mixing black with violet Elumen give me the colour I want and make it last longer since there is black in the mixture and black is hard to get out? How much black do I mix with violet to get a dark purple/plum colour? Also, what do you suggest I use to do my roots, as Elumen doesnt stick to virgin hair? I have very fine, thin hair and the roots on the back of my head are taking over and it looks bad.
I would like to stick with Elumen as it isn't damaging to your hair and the bleeding doesnt stain anything besides towels. We have one of those new tubs that seem to be made out of plastic and would stain easily. I looked up a lot of brands of purple and it seems like every other dye stains like crazy.
Hopefully someone out there can give me some advice. Sorry for the long post!
Thanks,
Courtney.
EDIT: I use Alterna Anti-Aging Caviar shampoo and conditioner, and wash my hair every day in cold/luke warm water when I have to work but if I don't have to work I just wash every second day. I don't think it's my shampoos fault since it's just the ends that fade quickly. What do you think of Bumble and Bumbles Gentle Shampoo? I plan to try that next.
hard to advise without a picture, but it sounds like your base wasn't lightened enough and the remaining warm tones are pulling the purple dye to a warm magenta shade. You need a light blonde base for cool toned, violet purple shades, so you will need to bleach past the orange stage.
Using more blue on a darker base is likely to result in a muddy colour.
I would try Pravana violet, diluted with at least the same amount of conditioner to prevent bleeding, or one of the Adore purples, Adore is the brand least likely to bleed/stain.
Washing less frequently with SLS free shampoo and cool water will help prevent fading, as will adding a little colour to your regular conditioner. Daily washing and bright hair colours are not a great combination.
Sorry, didn't cross my mind to post pictures. Here are pictures with dates.
Lone picture was edited with a filter for instagram, but you can see where that section of hair on the left is pink. That was on May 16. After washing 5 times in the span of two weeks when I first got my hair dyed on April 8, the whole midway point down was that colour.

PRAVANA! That is the brand she used first that my hair rejected. That gave me the results in the 1st picture on April 7.
It looks like the hair was only lifted to an orange or gold at most. For a pastel shade you need platinum blonde, and for a vivid cool toned purple rather than a magenta shade, you will need at least a yellow blonde.
I think your stylist has used warmer purples as they are more likely to cover a darker base without going brown/muddy.
Bleaching again will give you a better base for achieving the purple in the first pic, or you can try a darker, more pigmented dye with more blue/violet tones.

Did she condition your hair before applying the dye? If so, your hair probably didn't reject the dye--dyes like Pravana work the opposite to permanent dyes and need to be applied to freshly washed, unconditioned hair and left in for a minimum of a couple of hours to have a decent result.
What Wicked Pixie has advised in regards to tone and how to ensure colour lasts is spot on. Your hair was too warm for what you wanted and needs to be taken blonder over time, and definitely start stretching your washes and using an SLS-free shampoo. If you don't like how your hair looks/feels without washing it every 1-2 days, dry shampoo is a great option.

I'm not sure if she conditioned my hair or not. When she lightened my hair to blonde she washed it out twice, not sure if that would have been shampoo and conditioner. She also only left the pravana in for 20 mins.
I'm new to the vibrant hair colouring community so I'm confused as to what cold and warm toned means. The colour that I'm wanting to maintain on my own is a dark purple, like in my last picture. The shampoo I've been using is parabens, sulfates, and phthalates free - what is SLS free? I have ran out of that shampoo now though and am waiting for the B&B shampoo to arrive which claims to be good for coloured hair.
The last time I added colour to my hair was around May 19 whenever it was that I coloured my ends. The colour seems to be lasting well this time. It's only now starting to fade, but there's no rose-gold tinge as of yet. I am thinking its because I stopped conditioning every time I wash my hair. I have also been washing my hair every second day now instead of every day because someone recommended I try Batiste dry shampoo and that one actually works for me.
I have a silly question. Since I want a dark purple, would dying my hair constantly over the current colour eventually get rid of any blonde trace? Like, will my hair "become" purple? Lol. I don't want to bleach my hair again.
PS. Sorry for the delayed response. Tied up with uni, work and moving.
I want to try out the Adore dye that Wicked suggested. Can that go over top of Elumen or do I need to bleach? I really don't want to bleach again, I've been losing a lot of hair when I brush. The amazon seller I bought the Elumen off was at the time $30, but they are out of stock and don't know when it will be restocked.... everyone else is selling for $80. π
You almost never need to bleach out semi dye if you're dying over it again. Fade the elumen and put the adore dye over the top of it π
