Hey guys! I'm looking to dye my hair grey (at home of course) I'm hoping to achieve the levels in the second/bottom picture but I'm not sure if I need to give my hair (top/first picture) another round of bleach or at least another tone before I do so?
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I just wing it and mess it up.
Thanks!
What is your hair history? How much have you bleached it up to now and over how much time?
It looks like you're on the cusp of getting it to that grey. Have you toned or is this straight from bleaching?
Hey thanks for your response,
The majority of it was virgin and has only been bleached three times, one of which was a bleach bath over about 3 months or so, bleach bath was done 3 weeks ago with just one application of purple conditioner done day of the bleach bath (so that current photo is what i'm left with since then). The ends (about 2-3 inches) have been through the wringer a bit but before the initial bleaching 3-4 months ago went a good 2 years dye free and are in pretty good shape considering, I am willing to sacrifice them though.
-When I do dye it I was planning on just diluting down some Ebony from Directions as I live in NZ and we have very limited access to brands and product ranges here. Has anyone had any experience with making grey from a straight black dye?
I might be wrong here but I think Directions Ebony has a green base so you may end up with a muddy green if you dilute that...
Oh no I definitely don't want that! I also have access to Crazy Colour and Manic Panic, Directions or Fudge Paintbox have just always been my go to's. Is there anyway I can figure out in store the base colour besides holding the pot up to the light and taking a stab in the dark?

Depending on the batch, it's green or red based. Neither will give you a good grey.
You're better off using a diluted purple dye or shampoo if you can't get anything else online. You won't be able to get that deeper grey on the roots though.
To me, it looks like the ends of your hair are very close to the point of breaking. I think if you bleach again you risk having to have quite a lot cut off, not just the ends. A bleach bath might be ok, but I'm very hesitant to say go for it. I'd try a strand test with some purple shampoo and see how you fair.
