Hi guys I'm new. I have had bleach blonde hair over a year now. Roots are done every 9 weeks. I have naturally dark hair. The last few months it has been falling out in globs after a shower. Even my boyfriend says "THAT'S how much you're losing every time??" It's horrible. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence or its my numerous autoimmune and malnutrition health problems (I am very ill) but my hair has never ever fallen out like this.
I have heard people using the Joico K pak conditioner and shampoo line complain about hair loss so my first start will be not to use that at all
I am just very concerned and upset π
How is it falling out? Is it by the roots or is it breaking off?
If it is falling out by the root, then it could be an autoimmune/nutrition issue and you should probably see your doctor to get blood work done and establish a cause. Taking some hair/skin/nails pills could help and try not to put conditioner right on the scalp. Hair loss can also be caused by not rinsing out some conditioners properly. I know it is an old myth that conditioner softens the roots and causes hair loss but it cant hurt to try this. I have used joike k pak and hadnt had any issues, i dont use it on the scalp though, only the damaged ends.
If it is breaking off then it is most likely damage from the dye they use on your hair. Do they re-dye all the hair or only the roots?
Of course, it could be a combination of things so safest bet is always to go to the doctor, especially since you said you are very ill.
Malnutrition can affect hair very much! Even when I'm on a diet I notice a difference in my hair and nails. Please take care of yourself π
Do you have thick or long hair? Normal shedding can be over 100 hairs a day, and you may just be noticing the shed hair come out more easily instead of sticking to the existing hair. 100 hairs can be a big handful! This can sometimes be noticed if you are using different products. That could be why people blame K-pak, it may just be making already shed hair slide out more easily. I find that if I don't use shampoo (CO-wash instead) my shed hair never comes out properly, it just stays trapped with the rest of the hair even if I brush it a lot. A sulphate shampoo releases it all!
If you have bleached hair you can very easily see if the hair coming out is due to breakage (there will be no dark root) or from shedding (you'll be able to see the roots). If it's breakage I would recommend changing your bleaching routine but if it's shedding then you need to decide whether it's a normal amount or not, and go to the doctor if it isn't.
Yeah, most of the time when people say their hair is falling out, 99% of the time, it's not falling out but it's damage making it break.
But
As you have health issues already, then I think it would be worth bringing up with your doctor as the others are saying.
It could be that you've really just noticed just how much hair falls out, it's a surprisingly large amount as Kababra says. Your boyfriend noticing could add to that confirmation bias and convince you it's really bad when it's actually normal. Bleaching could also very much be the problem. So look for that root on the fallen hair next time you wash it.
So is it that relevant if your hair snaps in the middle or if it breaks from the root? I have diabetes (and also before having it I was losing a lot of hair) and my hair mostly breaks from the root... Conclusion: overprocessed hair or "natural" damaged hair? (I'm a bit worried as I bleached my hair four times within 3 weeks...)
To Alisheerose: I hope you get well and that your hair will be healthy soon again (sorry I can't help any further)
Breaking at the root and falling out at the root are two different things. Breakage is almost always mechanical or chemical damage. If you've bleached your hair that often in such a short time, I'm pretty sure it's chemical damage and it's breakage rather than falling out at the root. It's actually more likely to have breakage at the root because the heat from the scalp makes the bleach work more effectively and so damages faster.
Strange... because where it "breaks", is virgin hair... I left 5 cm hair (at least the whole zone 1) with natural black hair... Well I'll have to deal with it...
Bleach damage travels upwards into the hair so it doesnt matter if it is virgin hair. You should be able to tell if it comes out with the root as you can see a white end on the ones that fall out/ get pulled out.
