Hi everyone!
Here is another informative post for you dye-hards. So to recap on previous discussions of coconut oil here, we've established that it can protect the hair from bleach damage when applied and left to soak prior to bleaching, and that it also makes for an excellent deep treatment.
I've been reading up on the coconut oil shampoo method, from the long hair community forum again, and I think it sounds really promising. I am currently trying to get my hair in the best shape possible for my next bleach (last one was 10 October) as I'm tring to get to white as slowly and gently as possible before I can do some pastels. Also patience is definitely not part of my vocabulary so it's getting kinda painful seeing everyone's lovely dyed hair and not being able to dye mine because it isn't light enough yet :(. (I did do an experiment with Cotton Candy and Mystic Heather and although it looked really lovely, it just wasn't pastel enough for my taste, plus it washed out quickly as I went sailing).
Anyhow, here is some light (or not) reading about coconut oil shampooing:

So this is just stuff I found interesting, but there is lots more info to find if you look around.
I'm personally gonna try this new method the next time I wash my hair in the following manner:
-Clarify hair of build-up by washing with Boots blue shampoo (a very cheap shampoo with no coating agents). If hair is really gunky, use a teaspoon of Baking Soda.
- Then wash hair with a mix 1:1 of coconut oil and shampoo (using that same shampoo, but might experiment with different ones at a later time)
- rinse with diluted vinegar as usual.
And this should be it! I'll be reporting on how I get on with this and if it helps restore my hair to a better condition so that I can do my next bleach.
Oww very interesting thank you!!
Do you think the same effects could be had using a coconut shampoo? For instance I know there's a brand in the supermarket here that does "organic" shampoo + conditioner in a coconut range, and I spied "coconut oils" on the back of it. Might give it a whirl.
Thank you! Very handy!
I think it's worth trying a shampoo with coconut oil in it, just make sure it's not extremely far down the list of ingredients (then it means there's barely any in it).
I've done 2 washes with coconut oil mixed with shampoo so far (first time with simple boots shampoo, second time with purple shampoo). It seems that it's more of a progressive thing, so the results weren't drastic from the 1st shampoo, but it seems that already after the 2d my hair seems better.
It seems like it would be a good long term thing to do. And you can tailor how much oil you want to use depending on how dry/damaged your hair feels.
I'm sure the effects aren't completely different from doing a deep treatment by leaving coconut oil overnight and then washing in the morning, but it is definitely quicker to do! (and you don't have to spend extended amounts of time looking like an oil slick ;p)
this is awesome! i read the article and the idea seems to be if you use a cheap shampoo there is no silicone coatings to stop the oil being absorbed whereas a coconut shampoo might have silicones...
Interesting, thank you! Never even thought about mixing with shampoo.
