i'm getting further along in my pregnancy, and my expanding figure is starting to really bother me. so, i'm getting extremely antsy about my hair-- i guess i see it as something that's still within my power to control?
to be honest, i've been contemplating chopping it all off ๐ฎ
but, whenever i've done that in the past, i've wound up regretting it. ...it's probably because i've never had a really well done short haircut.
in high school i tried a pixie cut, and i had to carefully pin down the front and/or wear a bandana every day. not cool. i tried again a few times in college, and my husband (then boyfriend) did NOT keep his disapproval to himself. those attempts were a bit longer, but still no good. they weren't thinned out at all, so they were ROUND-- like, my head looked like a lollipop. i have so much hair that i get tons of giant, out of control volume. and when it's short, it's not like i can easily tie it back to get it under control!
not to mention, my hair is now the longest its ever been by quite a bit, and i'm really proud of it! so, putting all stupid pregnancy body-anxiety aside, i know that rationally it would be a mistake to go for a huge chop.
so, i don't know! i've been trying to reign myself in. i've been browsing pictures of long haircuts and watching youtube tutorials, just looking for something that might be reasonable and not too drastic. but i keep having the thought... "it's just hair!!"
sigh.... i just don't know what to do. anyone have any advice for me? btw-- i can probably dig up photos if anyone is interested, and/or if it would help.
Don't cut it off! Maybe try some awesome new up do's, there are some great tutorials for fancy plaiting techniques.
It doesn't happen to everyone, but often you can lose a lot of hair in the first few months after giving birth. I had very long hair, and so much fell out three months after giving birth that it would actually clog the bath plug and hoover. It was OK , I have a lot of hair, but it looked dreadful when it started growing back in so I had to cut most of it off. So I would advise saving any drastic hair decisions until later, when you may have to cut it whether you like it or not. Enjoy your long healthy hair now, in case it has to go later.
hmm, i hadn't considered that. i had some hair loss starting two months after my first was born (he was born in jan 2013), but not too much. it didn't get noticeably thin or anything, but you *could* tell when it was growing back-- it looked like tons of flyaways at my hairline. i had a fringe cut in to mask it. problem solved! but, my hair grows really fast-- my fringe is now past my lips when i pull it straight down, and the rest of the short regrowth stuff is about chin length now, and you can see it around my ears and nape when i have my hair up.
I'm not sure if this is safe during pregnancy (just never checked it out!), but if it's okay, I would suggest treating yourself to a Brazilian Blow-Dry ๐
My hair is naturally very full with uneven curls and has a lot of volume, and sorry if you've heard me go on about this before (lol), but when I got the keratin treatment done for the first time, I loved the new texture - it tamed it down incredibly. I always, without fail, tied my hair back and never liked it down, but after that treatment, I could wear my hair down, and it fell straight and actually looked longer too.
Failing that, have you thought of just getting some layers to thin it out a bit? To be honest, anytime my curly hair would get layered, it would actually pouf out even more, so I never liked that as a solution, but if your hair texture is different, it may help tame it down a bit.
i've never tried a brazilian blowout- i hafta look into it!
when my hair is long, its not that much of an issue. i do have layers now, and a grown out fringe. i get a little bit of a wave when i let my hair air dry, but it's not anything unruly, and minimal frizz. i can pretty much gently pull it straight, and a cool blow dryer definitely smoothes everything out without a problem. i've never *needed* heat, and i've never had to use a flat iron.
but i have such a large quantity of hair, that when it's short, it's like, constantly sticking straight up because it has nowhere to fall! i bet that if i had it done *well*, by someone that knows how to properly thin it out, it would be fine. know what i mean?
here's a super old picture of my pixie (2001-ish?), grown out a bit, yet still pinned down at the top, and still defying gravity, lol
edit to add: pictures of two different short hair cuts, 2005 maybe? see the lollipop effect? lol
I meant to ask you to post pictures, thanks for sharing that! To be honest, I think it looks cute, but I understand how much of a pain it must have been to pin it down all the time.
I'd say, as Wicked Pixie suggests, don't get it cut. Wait until you know for SURE that's what you want to do and won't regret it. I think sometimes these ideas take some time to build up in our minds and we do get to the point when we know for sure, no questions asked.
Perhaps have a chat with some hairstylists to see if they can suggest a cut for you? And equally, make sure you screen their advice well because they can promise a lot but only YOU can sense how your hair will really behave with a new cut. There might be a good 'short cut' out there for you, but till you know what it is, I'd say leave it long.
Just my humble opinion ๐
EDIT TO ADD:
Just saw the second one you posted. That is quite "round" in shape, as you described!
Ahhh, you get the Queen of the Mushroom People look too! ๐ I shall fight you for my throne ๐
LOL! i sure do!! ...i'm really glad i decided to dig up these pictures. i'd almost forgotten exactly how bad royalty looks on me!
That is also the reason I keep my hair long lol.
Mine's all right at the moment after my hair loss but I'm not sure how I'm going to cope when it all grows back again...!
With some more thinning, and some different styling, the 2005 look could have worked really well. You have a great face for short hair.
I get the same look with all hairstyles have I have so much hair ๐ I need a cut right now, so it's ballooning a little bit.
well, at least i'm not alone with the lots-of-hair puffiness!
and thank you, janine!! <3
i might still completely abandon this idea, since i'll miss my length, and because i saw the look on my husband's face when i mentioned this to him, lol. but, i know cuts closer to chin-length were less intolerable. (fun note: these pics are from 2010, and this chop rid me off all previously dyed hair, so this is my virgin color!)
maybe if i can find a salon here that im comfortable with... ack, i dont know!
(edit to add better current hair picture!)
Wow, I think that chin length cut looks incredible on you, it makes your face look so good! Also love the colour of your hair now.
