The first time I did roots only on newly blonde hair (which was probably December or January), I realised the problem with maintenance - the bleach eats away all the toner and left me with partially-warm, partially cool-toned hair. I really didn't realise it till I did it!
I tried to touch up with toner at the beginning, but I realised that toner isn't easy to apply only to the root area and seems to build up toward the lengths/ends. So when it's nearly time to do roots, I've been trying to fade a bit the week before so I can tone without as much toner build-up. I suppose since I'm a boring blonde, non-alternative colour, I think that everyone who is an alternative colour might always be working toward the next colour and fading quite often, but I may be completely wrong! So this question will probably apply to you as well.
If you're maintaining one colour for a while, do you get the problem of dye build-up at all? And if you do, what do you do to counteract it? Or are you able to touch up the roots so well when you bleach them that it's not a problem?
What do you suggest for a 'boring blonde' who has to do roots every so often, but doesn't want toners to build up too much at the ends - of course, always aiming for an even, all-over tone?
Perhaps fading the week before I do root touch-ups, the odd colour remover if the toner seems too strong, or an "occasional" bleach and hot water rinse if it is really necessary, these might be the best options... I just wonder how other blondes maintain their blonde!
I'm interested also to hear how you alternative hair colours maintain yours as well, not just blonde, so please share your ideas too... I know I'll learn from all your tips!

I bleach in four sections with a bottle and use my finger to gently spread it on or a very thin spatula so that it doesn't really touch the toned hair too much. I do shampoo / rinse each section separately. If you don't wish to tone the ends of your hair a day after bleaching or so you could also use a bottle and brush and skip the ends, apply conditioner to the ends before rinsing so the toner doesn't stick to them when you shampoo or simply rinse.
Thanks for that :-*
My problem is not necessarily the bleach but the longer lengths I've got now, I'm not used to it and it does get a bit fiddly to work with!
I also wonder about bleaching roots in sections - which seems like the best and 'neatest' method, but if you've used coconut oil before the bleach, aren't you just rinsing it out before even getting to bleach the next section?
