Magenta to....copper?

This is probably one of those things that's been asked 60,000times over, but it's really hard to find specific details that are relevant to my hair πŸ˜‰ So I apologise in advance!

I'm having my bimonthly hair crisis, which is when my roots are due to be touched up and then I freak out and decide I'm so sick of my hair and the maintenance and the colour leaking blah blah, then I'll do a bit of research on new colours and end up frustrated and confused and I just dye my hair the same way I always do and I'm happy for another 6 weeks and then repeat it all over again.  But it's been happening more and more, and coming into an Australian summer, all I want is to swim and wash my hair and not sweat pink, and I've had this colour for 3-4 years, I think it might ACTUALLY be time!

So.... QUESTION!

My hair is naturally mousey dark blonde, and I bleach to a yellow banana colour (Probably a level 7 or 8 ), then use Directions Tulip and Pillarbox Red mixed together.

I've been doing this for about 1.5 years now, previously I was just using Majicontrast as an all over colour every time until I realised what that was doing.  My ends are still pretty fried, and I've got a lovely browny colour band that comes out when the red fades, but it's not super noticeable and it's slowly growing out and getting better condition-wise.  I wash it once a week, use treatments regularly, let it dry naturally, don't style, etc etc. And I have A LOT of hair. So it's damaged, but there's so much of it it kind of doesn't matter hahaha.

I want to know what sort of process it would take to get to the coppery colour I've also attached. I don't want to be any darker than a level 6 if possible.

How faded will I have to get my pink/red?
Do I HAVE to fade it? Would it be awful if I just chuck a brown dye over the red and then let it fade itself?

I know fading is a pretty time consuming process, and my main concern is that I'm on front desk at my work, I can't come in with patchy awful looking hair, so I'd either have to do it over my Xmas break or just find a way to fade it using maybe different colours to keep it looking reasonable?

Sorry for the novel! Just trying to cram all the details in and I'm a bit of a rambler!  Thank you for any advice you can think of  *loveeyes* *loveeyes* *loveeyes*

Yes you have to fade it. The colour you want is paler/less intense than what you have, so there's no choice. You could try a colour remover. You can use them up to three times in quick succession, but it can't be guaranteed to work. But you don't need it that pale to get that copper colour, so it's quite likely it'll get enough out. I wouldn't call what you have magenta though, it's more on the orange side anyway, but that makes it a lot easier to go from that to copper πŸ™‚ just fading it could actually get you close to what you want. You might just be able to tone whatever you end up with to copper.

Faded colours are pretty fashionable now though, so once you can get past how it looks on you and carry on styling it nicely, it looks really nice. It took me ages to get used to faded colours, I worried about it constantly, but I get most compliments as my colours fade now. I started swimming a lot last year, so had to get used to it fading fast.

IME colour removers work really well on reds.
Once the red is out or more faded you can use a direct dye from Adore to avoid any further damage. they make loads of natural reds and browns and you can mix and dilute to create your perfect shade.
I wouldn't use a box dye over damaged hair.

No, they don't work well on reds, but she doesn't need to get a lot out really. It'd be quicker than trying to fade other ways.

Yeah, I've never got everything out obviously, but it's taken me back to at least ginger every time with all reds I've tried it on.

Haha, thanks guys. I think that was just clarifying what I deep down already knew, but was hoping for an easier answer.

I'll have to wait to Xmas and try to fade it down (Mmmmm, lots of swimming for meeeeee!) and see what I end up with.  I wouldn't mind it faded if it ever went evenly, but it's always gone really patchy when I've neglected it!

I would never box dye, I'll have a look at Adore and maybe some of the Live colours, but I'd always use professional dyes or a demi at the very least.

ANND! That photo mustn't do my hair any justice, because it is most definitely the pinker side of red. I'm almost offended by the orange comment because I went through so much heartache finding reds that wouldn't fade to orange hahahaha.

Thanks ladies!  This is going to be a long and possibly painful process πŸ™

Well, it's not meant as an insult! It's a lovely colour πŸ™‚ it does look more on the orange side in that photo, but the profile pic I've just seen looks totally different. A truer red... Still not magenta though πŸ˜‰

Haha! I didn't mean actually offended πŸ˜€ Thank you!

I'll give you that on the magenta though, I just googled what magenta actually is! It was just the name of one of the dyes I used to use and I ran with it! πŸ˜€
I'm sure you get similar comments off people all the time, but I always get "Is your hair pink or red?" "ITS MAGENTA!!!" ahahahaha

And it photographs a different colour always so it's hard to get a true image.

Now it sounds like it would be easier if it was an orange red because it'd fade to the colour I want. Boooo.

Try a colour remover on a strand. The last time I had red it came out with a colour remover and the last time my daughter had red we used a brand we hadn't tried before (Ion Colour Flash) and it faded from dark red to bright red then stayed that colour for 4 months. One round of colour remover got it out, I was seriously impressed with that one because it wasn't faded at all, still really vivid, but I got her back to blonde (not the final colour but definitely blonde) with one colour remover.
If possible I would fade as much as possible first, at least do several clarifying washes, as colour removers generally work better on direct dyes when they are faded.

Update time! I've been on holiday (Somehow didn't wash my hair the whole 10 days I was away, despite swimming haha) and come home and started doing Head & Shoulders and Vitamin C mixes to try to tone it down, and it was definitely fading but nowhere near to the degree I wanted.  So I sucked it up and picked up a "Jobaz Hair Colour Remover" from my local pharmacy.  And I'm almost in love with the result of doing that!  It's patchy as all hell, I seemed to have missed a chunk on the back of my head (this is why I get other people to do my hair. I'm a shocker) and there's weird purple/orange/pink shades running through it, but it's SO COOL.

My hairdresser says this will do to work with the colour, so it's booked in tonight. Fingers crossed I love it! (Now I've discovered hair strippers, who cares if I don't, I'll strip it out! HA)

Thanks again ladies! I'm oddly super excited about my (almost boring) change. Bring on summer and swimming and not staining everything I touch pink! πŸ˜€
