Maddening! Hair flicking out at the ends

I'm trying to grow my hair out from a bob, but it's at that annoying just-past-the-shoulder length where no matter what I do it flicks out at the end. Where the rest of my hair only as a slight wave to it looks AWFUL, just the last two inches flipping out at almost a 90 degree angle, I cringe when I catch myself in the mirror half the time.
*ott*
I usually dry my hair in braids to the waves can disguise it a little, but this only lasts a day or two. Once it's flipped I can never seem to get it out again unless I completely wet my hair again and restyle it, which is a lot of effort and I worry it might drain the colour a little. With all the crap I put my poor hair through I'm reluctant to use straighteners (the few times I have tried this it hardly works anyway) and most of the gels and serums recommended to deal with this seem cone heavy.

so it seems like two things would fix this: either having longer hair or cutting out my layers. I'm trying to grow my hair at the moment but I wouldn't mind sacrificing a couple of inches to get rid of the flicking if I was fairly certain it'd help... what do you girlies think? Is it worth cutting or should I just wait it out? What have you guys done to grow hair past this annoying stage?

Yep, you'll have to get your hair cut about an inch, maybe two inches, shorter. Or grow it out an inch or two more! It's all to do with the way the hair waves/curls form. They have a set pattern and if they're the wrong length it will stick out, the right length and it'll curl under. I'm having the same problem as my hair is now just the wrong length that it flicks out all over my head lol

Growing out the layers might help too. The bottom layers are more likely to flick out as that's basically what you're training them to do by having the layers. You're encouraging the curl. Maybe have it blunter with a graduated cut instead? So the top layer is only a little shorter than the bottom layer. That way the curls are encouraged, but not too much.

thanks for the advise! I've just realised that I have no idea when I'll next be able to afford a hair cut, hopefully it'll grow out and fix itself soon! Oddly, over the last few days I've noticed that wearing a tshirt to be helps a fair bit. I wonder if stopping the heat/moisture from my shoulders having contact with my hair is keeping it in place.
