Hi there! I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question.. but I'm also not sure where else to go! I've been happy with my natural color for awhile now... except recently. I'm starting to get grays (in my case they're white!) and they are just not what I want in my light/medium brown hair. My hair stylist who I do really love, finally finally finally got me in to cover up my grays. She did a strand test last month and found as close to what I wanted and I LOVE the color! I can even show you guys a picture of you want. However.. this morning in the bathroom, I saw them. My pesky stark white hairs are STILL THERE! My stylist didn't see them when I was in on Friday and honestly neither did I. She totally saturated my hair and left it on for 40-45 minutes. I sent her a message today explaining I still see the grays, but she hasn't responded and I'm honestly not sure what to do. So I found this board and looked around for awhile. I'm basically just looking for advice. My friends who don't know hair very well just simply suggest I find someone new. I'd prefer not to do that, but I'm on the other end and wondering if I should go buy a box and try to cover up my grays myself! Is this a common issue? Are my grays just that stubborn and I'll never be able to hide them by coloring? I'll say right off the bat, I really don't want to go the highlight/lowlight route. I have been waiting for so long for this appointment to get my roots colored and I'm just so so sad that it literally didn't cover the grays. π Any advice or suggestions or ANYTHING will be so appreciated!
If you put a box dye on it, you will probably ruin the carefully selected colour that you love right now.
There are many formulas that can cover resistant grey hair. Grey hair on different parts of your head can be more or less resistant than other parts though, so it could be that even with the strand test it wasn't possible to know this.
The best thing is to go back to your stylist of course, she can adjust the formula to cover the greys. It sounds like she is very busy though if it took months for what is really quite a common request for a hairdresser so if she still doesn't get back to you it might be best to choose another stylist.
If you decide to home colour instead, it may be some trial and error to find the right box dye for you so definitely strand test so you don't accidentally cover your whole head with a colour you don't like in the end.
Agreed, try to arrange to see your colourist again if you were happy with the overall colour, there are tricks she can use such as pre-softening or using a different strength of developer if your greys are resistant to colour. If your greys are particularly resistant you may find it difficult to cover them with a box dye anyway as they are not going to be better quality than what your stylist is using. (I usually recommend home colouring in most cases, but in this one where you have a stylist you are happy with, are happy to pay for the service and liked the colour I would encourage you to give it another chance until the stylist is able to perfect the formula).
Fun fact! All grey hairs are actually white (well, lacking in colour at least!) hair that looks grey is because it is a mixture of white and darker hairs, or that the white hairs are reflecting the colour of the rest of the hair!
Oh wow thank you to you both!! She actually did respond and she said that next time we can try another color line. That and she said I'll have to point out the spots where I see the white hairs and she'll saturate them again. She didn't say anything about choosing a stronger developer, but with my crazy amounts of googling, I've found lots that suggest using a stronger developer. Do you think I should say that to her? I really really don't want to sound like someone who is telling her how to do her job considering she went to lots of school for this and I've only done a day of googling.
I'm a little frustrated because she didn't offer for me to come in before my next appointment.. but maybe that's because it's already on april 14th for my haircut. She is super busy; she's about ready to have a baby so she's totally booked. I'm just sad about them. I know it's life and it's inevitable to have some gray hair... but it is really really bothering me. :/
Hmm that does seem a bit lax of her that she didn't mention either pre-softening or trying a higher concentration of developer, but perhaps she didn't want to get too technical with you? I don't think it would be out of order for you to ask about whether the other colour line she is thinking of trying is more suited to resistant greys and also if you were really happy with the colour she used it might be worth posing it as a question whether she could stick to the same colour and either pre-soften (this means soaking the hair in just developer for a short while before applying the colour mix to further open the cuticles) or whether it would be compatible with a higher concentration of developer.
I understand that she's busy but I think I too would be a little put out if she had offered the service in the first place to get rid of your greys and it hasn't done so!
You could certainly learn to do your own hair colour if you wanted to, but you may have to pre-soften to get the greys to take. I currently colour my hair with Wella Koleston just doing the roots as they come through and then keep the colour refreshed with Adore direct dyes - it's not difficult to do but I don't have many greys so it may be worth hanging on and seeing if anyone else here has more experience of dealing with grey hair.
I'm not ready to try coloring it myself yet.. I don't feel confident enough. Maybe someday if I keep dealing with not getting what I want from my stylist!
I just don't know what to do now. I can't decide if I should try her one more time or give up and go elsewhere. Her message to me when I said they didn't cover seemed so annoyed and it bothered me. I sent a message to my old hair stylist who I loved but she moved. She suggested giving her another chance and not giving up yet.
The first thing to reach for with large amounts of or resistant grey is usually a "double base" formula. She might not presoften or use stronger peroxide so I wouldn't worry about the technique just yet.
I would say it's perfectly normal to go to another stylist if yours can't fit you in and this shouldn't bother her either. Or maybe she didn't realise you wanted it fixed now? If she is responsive to messages you could even ask her for a recommendation if she doesn't have an earlier appointment available.
I think she probably didn't try to fit me in sooner because my next appointment is only 3.5 weeks away...
Thank you for your suggestion. I appreciate all the help so so much. I will keep you guys updated with what happens next. I wish I could get it fixed NOW which is why I'm so upset. But I understand that sometimes things don't work out right away. I feel like I could probably find someone to fix it right now, but I do really like her other than this instance. I just want someone to be like "come on in and I'll fix it asap!" And she's not doing that. I'm selfish...
Well no, you're not selfish you're paying for somebody's experience and expertise in providing a service for you - there's nothing wrong with wanting it to be right!
True... :/ Do you think I should go find someone else? Or wait the 3 and a half weeks and go back and give her one more try? :/ (I think I'm leaning towards waiting... but mostly because I have my next three appointments scheduled with her due to her maternity leave and my upcoming wedding...)
If you're happy with her work (and if you have your wedding coming up) I'd probably say stick with her. Better the devil you know and all that! Still I don't think you should feel bad that you are a bit put out that it wasn't right this time, usually I'd say push for her to see you sooner and correct it but if you want to keep her sweet (and she's pregnant and really busy) maybe it would be better to be patient!
