How to STOP all over bleaching!

How to transition?!!

I have been all-over bleach and toning for years and now want to stop and switch to a more natural look of highlights.  I've let my roots (which are naturally dirty dark blonde) go for about 1.5 inches so have quite a band.  Do I keep growing them and then get highlights?  Do I have them somehow dyed and blended into an ombre/balayage?  I don't want to have to dye all over brown.  Any advice?

Personally I think if I were you I'd persevere growing it out then get highlights or bayalage, maybe with some lowlights to break it up. You could put some brown through yourself it to break it up a bit but you need to be careful as using a box dye over bleach blonde will likely come out greenish or reddish depending on the base tones of the dye you use (one of mine in the past came out pink!). Any dye over the top of bleach will fade quite quickly anyway. You could put some of a brown direct dye through it but I'm not sure whether it would bleed into the blonde when you wash it.
