How is this type of hair called?

How's the type of hair called, that grows right at the back of your head, at the very bottom, along the hairline at kind of the back of your head, that never grows past a certain length? It's driving me nuts and I've seen other girl at work have it as well. I want to cut them as they make me look messy and sloppy, I want to have clean-looking, aesthetic hairline at the back when I put my hair in the pony, without them little strands of hair going all over the place... Can I cut it or maybe it will grow to normal length?

I noticed those hairs a long time ago when I was always wearing my hair in a pony, and I started shaving them off.  Some people shave them or do some sort of undercut to get rid of them.  I just keep then now as most people have them, and my hairline at the neck looks weird if I shave them off.

But funnily enough that was one area in my root touch-up this morning I accidentally omitted, so I had to bleach them out too because my neck looked horrible and dirty with them being brown and the rest of my hair bleached!

I don't know what they're called though, but mine never grow out past a few centimetres.

I think they're just referred to as "baby hairs"; most people have similar fine, thin hairs all along their hairline and they're most visible along the face and neckline.

I've heard that you can tame them with a soft-bristled toothbrush spritzed with hairspray or serum--just spritz the brush and comb them in the direction you want them to go.  Shaving them or waxing them is always an option, too.  I personally just leave mine, because they're pretty obvious all around my hairline and sorting them out would be a pain, plus I kind of like the softer look they give my pin-straight hair when I pull it back.

I also came across this interesting blog post that advocates reasons to leave it be; initially because most people don't notice these hairs or think they're cute, but she goes in to some philosophical reasons at the end that I found very interesting.

Thanks for the response!

Problem with mine is it's not tiny baby hair that are sticking out too much, it's a proper motherfreaking FRINGE, and when I don't do anything about it, it kind of goes to the sides and when You look at me, you can actually see them when my hair is in a pony! It looks so unaesthetic, so.. sloppy and just like I hate it. I will shave them I guess. Or at least trim

I forgot to mention (and Intemp's suggestion of a serum reminded me)...

I also try to work a small glob of conditioner into that area either before or after a shower when I'm not washing my hair, i.e., when it's in a showercap.  That seems to help keep them a bit softer and tamer because of course those hairs never get covered by a showercap and always get hit with water, and that probably causes them to dry out easily too.

Another really good solution, that @KatieSiepierski did, which I thought worked extremely well and looked cool too: Undercut!

You say you can see them when your hair is in a pony, and I believe you that they stick out too much, but just wanted to mention that those hairs are quite natural to have, and we probably notice things more than others do, so they may not be so noticeable to someone else as you might be thinking.

Maybe, but it's not really bothering me when I think about how others see it, but it just bothers myself.. I just hate those little hairs.

I loved what Katie did but I wouldn't go that far into the hair, I'd go around, thanks for the tip! πŸ˜€

I get the same thing. They are short because they are at the place where the neckline of all clothes rub against them and it causes much more breakage than on the rest of the hair. All you can really do is really look after them. Put on some anti breakage serum and keep your hair tied up while they grow. I like to braid my hair when i get them. They do eventually grow out with the right care.

I don't think they will grow... I've had them for years and they're all bizarrely the exact same length. I can live without them anyway XD

They do grow, you just have to really look after them so they dont break off.

I get this too! If I'm wearing my hair up, I just use a tiny bit of serum and then pin it up with a hair clip

I wouldn't agree that they will definitely grow. I have hairs on my hair line around the front and they never grow past 1-2 cm despite getting little damage. Some of us just have very short hairs.

Of course, I'm not discounting that some of this could be hair breakage, but I doubt it all is.

I learnt to live with them after years of hating it πŸ™‚
