How I may have ruined my hair.... oops.

I guess this post is mostly a sympathy post.

So, a couple of months ago (about 6), I decided I wanted to go blonde. Did that, but it left my hair in shaky condition. I babied it the best I could, and ended up going blue for a little while, before transitioning to red, and then using brown veggie dyes. I used one store box color during that time in brown, because I didn't have access to veggie dyes and I had a job interview soon.

About 4-5 months later (~1-2 months after box dye), I decided I wanted a nice soft ombre look. So, because I had been blonde before, I figured I'd use a color remover and see where that put me. I should have stuck to a familiar color remover, but instead I got ColorZap, which contrary to all indications, appears to actually just be bleach. Stupid, stupid me for not researching it, and stupid, stupid me for not strand testing, and stupid, stupid me for not realizing that it looked and worked like bleach! I washed it out as soon as I noticed, but of course that meant a blotchy mess and well....

My hair... disaster zone. I was losing a lot of it in the shower. At least enough that I had a serious freak out (my hair is quite long though, so sometimes when it gets tangled up I have to remind myself that it's not 100 strands, but probably 10 balled together). Still, you can imagine the panic as I went into repair mode. I instantly slathered on copius amounts of keratin rich conditioner and rinsed.

Right now I have on a veggie dye mixed with conditioner in an attempt to even out the color a bit and restore some life... I have the Aphogee protein treatment downstairs that I'll probably use in a few days (I don't plan on getting my hair wet for as long as possible after today). If I had coconut oil I'd slather that on too, but I don't at the moment.

Basically, I feel really dumb, and am severly unhappy with what I did. My hair falls to my bra strap, but I guess a bob might be in my future?

I hate that they have the names so similar - Color Oops and Color Zap. If you're not aware of the differences it is very easy to get them confused! Is your hair breaking off or is it coming out from the scalp? Does it feel mushy at all, like wet cotton sort of?

You're on the right track though, some protein and moisture will do you some good, and especially a cut. The more damage you can bear to cut off the better, so the damage doesn't travel up the strand.

When my hair was completely and utterly fried, using this a couple times a month made a world of difference to my hair. Though I know it was fried beneath it all, it really helped a lot! I got a good trim, used this stuff along with Biolage Ultra Hydrating Balm as my conditioner, and within a 2-3 months my hair at least felt back to normal again + I wasn't getting splits or breakage anymore, even though I still had a lot of damage under it all. If your hair is fried it can really help manage your hair and make it look and feel a lot nicer until you can grow out/cut off the rest of the damage. Just remember that the damage is still there so don't be fooled into thinking your hair can handle more processing. Just thought I'd share my experience with dealing with damage as it really helped me a lot πŸ™‚

As I was at a beauty supply store I should have gone with Color Fix which I believe is just ColorOops. However, after reading ColorZap all seemed to be in order. Foolish foolish. I should have known the second it didn't smell like sulfur.

To be honest, I'm not sure where it's coming from, but I strongly believe it's the shaft, as I had about 1-2 inches of roots that had only been processed once (with box dye), and an additional .5 inches or so of virgin hair. Of course I tried to avoid the scalp, but some did get it on it, so it's possible that's where it was from, but just given the fact that my scalp has been fairly chemical free lately, I doubt it.

I have definetly experienced stretchy hair before, and it's not quite that. What it is however is FRIED. Honestly I've never quite felt it like this, it just feels dry and dry. However, it's not breaking off (YET) to the touch even at it's driest, so that's not the worst thing that could happen.

I do have a few super cute bobs that I pinned some time ago,so even that's not the end of the world, but still horrifying.

Also, the good news is that using veggie dyes an ombre is still possible. I put on a light brown veggie dye (straight) at the roots then heavily diluted with conditioner at the ends, and there's ombre for sure. I will however by a deeper brown veggie dye to go back on the roots for a slightly more dramatic result.

EDIT: My current plan of action now that my hair appears to be dryish is using a dark brown veggie dye at the roots and blending it out, and using a clear veggie gloss (I.E diluter) on the whole thing to at least restore some shine.

Veggie dye and conditioner will really help. Also some oil, it doesn't have to be coconut oil, use whatever you have in eg olive oil, almond oil, there is bound to be something in the kitchen or bathroom. You can also make masks with stuff you will probably have in, eggs, bananas, honey, avocado etc
