Help with box dye

Was your hair dyed already? Bleached? Anything like that? Can you give a quick history as it'll be easier to work out what's happened then 🙂

I have theories, but it's not worth typing them all out until I know a it more of what's going on.

My hair has only been dyed cosmic blue by the same brand before. My hair has never been bleached. If this also helps my hair is dark and also kinda frizzy(btw I'm white if that makes a difference)

Was it a semi permanent dye or permanent dye that you used, this time and last time. Was there any blue left?

The last one said permanent but there was non left that I could see, I dyed it ages ago.
The one I've just used is permanent too, it says it lists up to 3 shades of your natural hair if this is helpful 🤔

It being permanent is more important than there being any left. Permanent hairdye acts like a bleach, so in effect, it has been bleached. That's just an FYI really though 🙂

I think what you have is what's known as hot roots. I can't say for sure why it's not taken on the ends, but a difference in porosity compared to the roots is probably a part of the problem, this difference will have been caused by the previous dying. So, hot roots is when the heat from your scalp makes the dye nearest your scalp work faster, so the part of the dye that lifts the dye a few shades works faster and lightens that hair much quicker. This means the added colour turns out brighter.

I have one more question, was it cold the day you did the dying? I assume it was because more people that are likely to use the forum aren't in summer right now, I'm in New Zealand so it's warm!

That does make alot of sense when put like That, I had issues last time with it sticking more at the roots of my hair.

I live in the UK and it's been a cold winter so it wasnt exactly the warmest, does that make a big difference?

Yep, the cold does make a difference. As the warmth makes the roots take faster, if the ends get cold then they work slower.

Can you post a photo of your hair? You might be better getting a non permanent dye. A lot of them last longer than permanent dyes do. It's hard to say without seeing the colour of your hair. I'm reluctant to say just use the dye again because it can be very damaging even if it is cold and not working well enough.

I can't right now as the photo won't be clear enough because it's dark in the UK, but I will send one tomorrow

No problem! I only moved to NZ from the UK in Sept, so I remember UK winters and lack of light well 🙂
