I'm getting married on Halloween this year and I want my hair to be purple (eggplant to be exact). I've been dying my bangs purple for quite a long time and I want to take the plunge to a full head of my favorite color. My natural hair color is dark brown and recently my Cousin (who is the color specialist at our local beauty school) bleached (?) my hair using Redkin Flashlift powder lightener and Aveda 20 volume developer. The first picture I attached shows what that did to my hair. Right after that we put the brand Splat (2 parts Lusty Lavender and 1 part Blue Envy) in my hair and it was beautiful. The second picture shows my hair up after my first wash. I chose this picture because you can see how streaky and uneven the color is. The last picture is after my second wash. It looks ashy - like we put the dye on top of my natural hair color even though we bleached it out. I've never had this problem before and I'm starting to get really worried that we wont be able to figure it out in time for the wedding without frying my hair. I don't know if this will be helpful information or not but I'm pretty low maintenance so I don't use a lot of hair products - zero actually (unless someone else does my hair) because I'm a brush my hair and I'm ready to go type of girl.
As of right now it's even lighter than in the last picture except for my roots and bangs. Those are the only places where the color is vibrant and beautiful but it looks really, really weird. Someone please help me figure this out. My Cousin is just as confused as I am. In the 10 years she has been doing my hair we have never had a issue with bleaching my hair to get the color I want.
I've not heard great things about Splat. You might want to try Adore or Special Effects. Apply it to freshly washed, unconditioned hair, and leave it in for hours. See what you end up with. I don't think you need to bleach again, as you want a deep, eggplant shade of purple.
You say you're low-maintenance ... I'm guessing that means you use basic shampoos without checking the ingredients? You're best off getting an SLS-free shampoo ... no Sodium Laureth/Laurel Sulphate. It'll help stop fading.
Splat is awful! And it has horrible rub off. Definitely go for adore or special effects.
The first time I used Splat I put it right on my dark brown hair and it turned out beautifully (another reason why we're confused). It also lasted quite a long time as well as came off my skin with a warm rag and soap. However, it does rub off when wet and for the first week (after dying all my hair) has been flaking. Sometimes you gotta take the good with the bad.
Intempestivity, you're right about the shampoo. I'll have to find a SLS-free shampoo now that I know what to look for. π
I'll also look up Adore and Special Effects.
