Help! My hair is copper & I just don't want it

Hi. I'm new here when it comes to posting but I've admittedly been lurking this place to years.

Let me get straight to the point. I've dyed my hair for years. Every color. Black, red, pink, purple, blue, yellow, dozens of shades of brown.. I've done all of them. And then, I chopped off all of my hair and let it all grow in naturally. Unfortunately, I quickly remembered my natural hair color is hideous, but I'm I desperately would like to attempt to keep it close to au-natural.

My hair is a dishwatery brown/blond ash color with this completely unnatural looking copper/orange tone that comes out the second sunlight hits it. It looks like I've dyed my hair and it's faded, now that the winter months have hit, because my roots are ash-toned from new growth since the sun stopped shining, but the rest of my hair is coppery red-brown.

I've previously tried using an ultra violet (manic panic) + conditioner mixture and left it on overnight. This works, but only for about two or three days (no washing) before my hair starts to go right back to the copper color. This is the reason I began dying my hair in the first place.

My hair had always "spit" out a copper undertone when I've dyed my hair in the past as well, so I tended to stay on the darker side of the color spectrum to make it easier on myself. Now that I'm getting older though, I'd like to stay away from the really dark colors and try to keep my hair closer to natural. Is there a way to tone with copper down without too much processing?

I bet it looks fine to everyone else πŸ™‚

Regardless of that, I understand as I hate my natural colour which looks green in some lights. Not that I've seen my natural colour in over twenty five years lol

Violet isn't the colour you need for copper tones, you need blue for that. Use something like directions neon blue and dilute that. It's purple based, so it's the best of both worlds. You might need pre soften with some peroxide to roughen up the cuticle a little, that will help with the longevity.

I added a photo for more of a visual of what I'm referring to. My hair is not dyed, this is all natural -- sun exposed versus winter growth. Is there any solution that would be a bit more permanent? I've tried several different variations of manic panic colors on the blue & purple scales. Ultra violet and shocking blue have given me the best results, however, it's so temporary! I'd like to not need to sleep with a shower cap on 3 nights a week. Is there a possibility that a wella toner would work? I know they are normally for bleach and blond hair, while I lean more toward the light brown, but is there any hope it would work? Would it be worthwhile to lighten up just a bit to be able to tone it with a more permanent toner?

Don't go for wella toners, they're so damaging and really not very permanent.

As I suggested, try pre soaking with peroxide. It'll help the dye stick a little more and for longer. There's no need to leave it on for hours. The reason I suggested this is because I understood your hair is virgin hair with a little sun bleaching. Virgin hair needs extra help for direct dyes like manic panic etc to stick. Hence it's been rubbing off your hair in a few days, it has nothing to stick to. It just needs a little roughening up to stick more. Just do this pre softening once every few weeks and it'll help a lot.

Also, you could just add some to your normal conditioner to use each time you wash. Leave it on for 15 mins or so and it'll help a lot.

Also, ultra violet isn't the most highly pigmented dye so it won't last as long as a blue.
