Okay guys, I was a bright red head for a few months (i used loreal hicolor), i then decided i wanted to go darker and stupidly used a drugstore box dye that turned my hair kind of dark.. some sections looked black. I used a color remover, got my hair down to a copper/light brown color. Of course not all the color was even, it was darker in some places. Anyway, I used an argan oil hair dye red violet brown, long story short it didnt come out the way i wanted it to, and i ended up with black blotches again! I used color remover a couple weeks later, and tried medium tobacco brown dye by argan oil, and the color is ugly. The worst part is the black parts are there again! Any idea why this keeps happening? Even if those black parts could've been darker than the rest of my hair after color remover, I used a 30 developer, so wouldn't that have lifted and made those parts lighter?
I basically just want a very nice dark brown color, not too light but also not too dark where it looks black. It's my natural hair color basically, and i want to grow out my natural hair while having the rest dyed a similar shade. I'm done with the damage and upkeep and just want natural hair for awhile haha.
i know that my hair is damaged, i've never fully bleached it but i have used hicolor two or three times, and a couple other dyes afterwards, 20 or 30 developer depending on what i wanted to achieve, i just dont know if the black is cause it's damaged or not, i would find that weird since it's more on the ends of my hair and those were dyed least.
Any suggestions on what to do to stop the black from coming back and of a good dark brown I can use? ! π i would prefer permanent as i dont want to have to dye it again for months, and im not sure semi dark browns last that long.
Please stop dying your hair with those kinds of dyes as you're causing a lot of damage each time you use a box dye or dye with peroxide. We need to work out some more details before going on to suggest anything else.
How soon after using the colour remover have you dyed?
Have you used protein treatments at all? If so, what?

I dyed it the same day as the color remover, I really couldn't go out with the color it was after removing. This was 3-4 days ago.
I haven't used any treatments, I was using the ion repair packets at Sally's & coconut oil . I also just ordered a couple henna n' placenta packets since I heard good things about it.
I'm thinking I'll have to remove the color and find a semi dark brown?
I'm also going to get my ends trimmed as there's quite a few split ends.

This could be your problem. Combined with patches of overly porous parts that are sucking up too much dye. Each time you use a dye with peroxide, you're making it worse unfortunately.
So, colour removers work by shrinking the colour molecules so they wash out. Often, not all of them wash out straight away, so need a few more days to come out. When you dye again immediately, you re-oxidise those molecules so the colour comes back.
So, yes, you need a semi/direct dye to use if you're going to dye straight after. Make sure it doesn't have peroxide at all as this is what is doing the re-oxidisation. I recommend Adore dyes which have some good browns. You can also mix them to get the exact colour you want.
I don't know about the henna n' placenta as I've not used them and don't know anyone that has. From what I've read it works for some and not others. I'd personally recommend Aphogee 2 step as it lasts longest.
I agree it seems like it is a combination of your hair reoxidising from using products containing developer too soon after a colour remover and some areas of your hair sucking up more dye from being more porous due to damage.
You say that it is more concentrated at the ends. You say that your ends have been dyed less, but every time you used an all over dye these ends have been processed. They are also the oldest part of your hair so they will have more environmental and mechanical damage (sun damage, damage from styling etc).
I have a similar problem to you in the fact that I currently dye my hair dark brown but the lower part of my hair towards the ends has been previously processed a number of times, in my case the ends fade much more quickly than the rest of my hair.
In your case I would be tempted to leave the brown colour you used last in your hair, wash it a few times and see if the darker patches fade - if they are due to damage you may find they fade more quickly and your hair will end up looking more even. I would then use Adore browns to keep topping up your colour and making it more even.
If the darker patches don't fade and they are too dark to blend in with an Adore dye then you could use a colour remover, but the lighter your base the more you will notice Adore fading.
There is probably very little point in using yet another permanent (or demi permanent) brown dye as if your hair is damaged it will fade anyway, and every time you process your hair this will get worse until eventually it won't hold anything!
Thanks for the replies. I won't touch anything with peroxide from now on! I think I'm going to try the fading thing for awhile. And if not use adore.
Will using color fix ruin my hair? I've used it twice this month but wasn't sure how much damage it could cause. I honestly don't even feel like using it again but just curious, I will probably fade the color for awhile and then top it with adore
Color fix is relatively damage free. It can be drying for some people, but nothing a good conditioner won't fix.
Yes, my reasoning for not using the color fix again wasn't concern about damage, just that I find Adore works better over a darker dyed base!
Does anyone have experience with adore dark chocolate? I read that it has a purple base which kind of interests me. But I don't want purple hair and I'm afraid it'll do that. I may go fade it to a light or medium brown and put it over. I'm just having trouble choosing a nice brown from adore since there ain't many reviews on browns. :/
I only use Adore Mahogany, which is really nice rich brown but does have strong red/ purple reflects. If you look in the Show off your hair section in Natural Colours there are a few posts from people using other shades though!
